L52HD first gear detent
« on: Nov 15, 2016, 07:16:57 PM »
I've finally got all my parts ready to swap my L52HD into my 83 to replace a tired L52 currently in the truck. The L52HD looks and runs through the gears perfect, however, I have one concern. The lever doesnt "click" into first gear like every other. From what I gather, that is likely a shift spring issue. I have replaced the shift springs on the exterior of the case (for third and fifth gears I believe,) however, it seems like the spring for first gear is hidden in the top cover. Since I have a donor L50 with perfectly operating springs (each gear "clicks" perfectly as it should,)  can I go ahead and just swap the covers (with rods and forks still installed? From what I gather the L52HD just has different bearings and gears, but everything in the top cover should still be the same. Since the L50 and L52 seem to be identical as far as the top covers are concerned, am I safe to make this swap? There doesn't seem to be any input shaft play, and all the internals on the HD look perfect. I'm hoping robbing parts from my 50 will get the HD back on the road. Advice/ opinions greatly appreciated!

Thanks
