Knuckle Alignment?
« on: Jun 18, 2016, 10:07:13 PM »
Marlin is selling a knuckle alignment tool for $450...

What the heck does that do?

I want to go through the front axle on the new '84 Xtra cab project.  I figure with almost 150K on it and 32 years of service some fresh seals and bearings would help it last another 32 years.  I'm also going to upgrade to FJ vented rotors so might as well tackle everything else while I'm in there.

Do I really need this knuckle alignment tool?  That makes the cost of this project somewhat prohibitive, and I'd never heard there was anything that could be aligned anyway.

Any info appreciated!

You don't need that tool. Really its just one of those things that Toyota calls for in their FSM but most people don't have that kind of money.

Great, thanks!

I'm tearing into this today.  Really want to get this truck sorted out so I can start driving it, and need to sell my old truck ASAP so need to get the springs swapped also.

Re-use the old shims and make sure you don't loose order in which they came off!   there are top and bottom shims for both sides.  They dictate knuckle centering to axle housing and trunnion bearing pre-load.

Once steering arm and trunion bearing cap is torqued down the knuckle should have a little drag(preload) but not stiff or hard to move by hand.  Also should not be really easy to turn, zero resistance.  Do this with out felt or ball wiper not bolted down as that will produce false drag.  This is all assuming you are using new bearings, which you should replace while you are in there.  Use the Marlin Crawler Eco Seals, only way to go!  You will be cussing up a storm trying to put the OEM design in

Thanks for the tips!

Marlin "Front Axle Service Kit" on order.  Should get here in 2-3 days.  Gives me time to clean and paint the hubs and get the new rotors installed on them.
