Axle flip?
« on: Dec 09, 2011, 11:16:37 AM »
I am looking for any info on how to flip an axle. I want to make a LC axle driver drop (running Ford engine/trans/tcase) for my 4Runner. When I search, all I get is U bolt flip kit info.

Check out the making of the willy mammoth, kinda think he did that early in the build.

On a mini truck axle cut and turn knuckle balls ~180*, flip the axle upside down, and install the third right side up (or upside down in relation to what you started with).  IIRC 4 studs don't line up and will have to be relocated when installing the third upside down (also some grinding for clearance).

I'm not sure how much of this translates to the 40 series...but pull the third and try to install it upside down to see how much will need to be modified.

To save yourself the headache look into a ruffstuff housing in the driver's drop flavor.  They're very reasonably priced assuming you use your knuckle balls/third/etc (just buy the bare housing).

I have wheeled with NorCalPR a couple of times and the flip works great. He told me 'you just have to take your time, measure a dozen time or so, and it is easy'. :eyebrow:

This thread is a couple years old but I finally got around to doing a  FJ60 AXLE FLIP myself and I'm very pleased with the results. Here's the link to it if anybody is interested in this kind of thing,,,,
