FJ80 FF axle swap brake question
« on: Dec 01, 2015, 04:31:53 AM »
I've got an 83 FJ60 that I swapped a full float disc brake rear 80 axle to. With stock master/proportioning valve the brakes were dragging a ton. I removed a residual valve (I think that's what it was) from the proportioning valve. It works better but it seems like they are still dragging.

If/when I change the master out to an FJ80.... What do I need to do to make the rear brakes not drag?!?

Have you checked to see if the E-brake drum is engaged at all?

When I got the axle I tore it completely apart to grease bearings etc. When I did that I debraked all of the parking brake stuff.

I can hear a slight squeal when starting to move. Before I pulled the residual valve, it would barely roll. It's hard to say how much is grabbing. I wheeled a few weeks ago on a nasty drainage and did a lot of tire spinning. Rig smelled brakes when I finally pulled cable.

I swapped one of these axles into my 2002 tacoma so take this for what its worth.  With a residual valve that evreyone suggested and an adjustable prop valve the brakes dragged like crazy.  I yanked both the adjustable prop valve and residual valve and used the stock LSPV as my new prop valve and now all works great.  If the rod moves to far up (more fluid) the brakes drag so i have it set just about in the middle and i can lock the rears up if i stomp the pedal to the floor, yet it stops great in evrey other situation. This is with the stock tacoma master and booster.
2002 taco ext cab trd, 3.4 5spd.  255/58/16, OME 882s, all pro bumpers f/r, Inchworm front plate, crawler mounted with an mc07 XD to an inchworm lefty, marlin 4.7 gears, marlin 30spline output, RAD designs triple sticks.  Fj 80FF rear with a spartan locker.
