Topic: move truck with no third??

I busted my pinion in two on metal masher at EJS.    I have it all torn apart right now while I wait for replacement parts.  Question is:  Can I put the rear axles back in, put the tires on, and move it from one side of the drive way to the other??  Do the carrier bearings in the third support the weight of the truck on the axles?  Or are the wheel bearings enough support it??

i think they support it but i doubt   just moving it to another part of the driveway  wont hurt anything

i don't know if i'd want to -- the axle bearing only supports the end of the shaft.

i drove my truck with a busted third with the rear driveshaft removed in 4wd though, it was fine.

It will be fine to move it.  once the 4 bolts that hold the inners in are bolted down tightly and all that it will support it without any troubles. 

Dont drive it around, just move it where it needs to go.  It will be even better on the whole situation if your tires are aired up tight so they arent grabbing the pavement and putting stress on parts.

Good idea....but hard to do with a HI Lift.

u dont have a floor jack?

thats what i have to do to get it all the way in the garage to work on it.  they also have those dolly things that you jack up the car and put them under the tires to move it around. there not too expensive

If you have a hi-lift what is the worry?  Just jack it up and push it over a few times.  I do that to "walk" my truck around off road if needed.

ive done that too, but i find it easier to use a floor jack if you have one. less work, but you have to work with what you got

i think jacking the truck up  and pushing it over  via  highlift will put more stress on the bearings  than driving it

I think that he is right....   But I can borrow a floor jack.

You guys are putting way too much thought into this whole ordeal.  notajeep just drive the bastid and get it over with.  If you go through life worrying about whether something so simple is safe you'll never have any fun.  If you would have just driven it 2 days ago you would probobly already have it back together.

Assembly is not the problem....    Waiting on new ring and pinion is why it needs to be moved.  4 wheel parts says May if I want it covered under warranty.

You don't have a spare third to throw in there for now? Even without the proper gearing, at least you can still drive it around in 2wd... why not?
