Well, I have a 3RZ in the back of the runner right now. I'll be tearing it down I  the next few days and sending it to the machine shop. I've NEVER BUILT A MOTOR Before... This Is Going To Be fun!

My motor is still running strong!
This is going into a friend's 98 tacoma. I'll have some pictures up this weekend. As far as parts... still doing research. I'm open to opinions on parts. Particularly the connecting rods.. will be running up to 25 psi.

My buddy runs them with Arias pistons in his 98 eclipse and its putting down 700 AWHP on a mustang dyno on pump gas and w/m on 43 psi... the rods have 30,000 miles on them with no issues.

Might ask LCE about the rods.  I think you're focusing on the right spot with the 3rz.  Ask about removing the balance shafts too.
Have the thing decked with the front cover on it and make sure it's decked to the correct resolution for a metal head gasket.  The step up from MLS is o-ringed, which requires that someone know what they're doing at the machine shop and probably that particular motor.

I don't think you'll need 25psi to get to 400hp.

What are you doing for EFI?

It will need at least 20 psi with aggressive timing to achieve 400 WHEEL HP. You'll want H beam rods, forged 8.5:1/9:1 pistons, ARP everything, cometic HG, 1000cc injectors, adjustable timing gear, big cams, porting/gasket matching, and custom manifolds to get this done properly... Either URD piggyback or Megasquirt management...

All of this with a damn good tuner.  You could have all the perfectly built engine for it but not make power or blow it up without it tuned right.

Of course, its ALL in the tune. Having an over built engine just gives you that much more piece of mind.

Have a look at how the dynos are working out over on customtacos.  They're reaching 350 hp on "stock" motors (custom tuned) - 400 hp with simple intakes and other mods... Apparently the 2rz/3rz loves boost.

http://www.customtacos.com/forum/13-performance/141796-96-2rz-turbo-dynoed.html

If he's really after 400hp, you'll need a turbo that's efficient at that boost level and airflow (HP).  If he doesn't need 400hp, no reason to get a turbo sized like that as it costs you HP on the back side of the curve...
One listing of 434hp 368tq @ 18PSI... I believe that's on minimal internal mods.

im running 10lbs of boost with a 58mm pulley. The supercharger boost is limited because of the chance of an over rev on the blower.

Looks like I'll be cranking the boost up on my current set up to 10 psi   I'm @ 4.5psi now. Stock computer/tune and I'm putting down 165hp and 200lb ft tq to the floor. Not 5 op shabby for 4.5psi

Two hard years of rev limiting snow wheeling and a ton of crawling. Be sure you have a good wide band afr gauge so you dont lean it out. I have a piggy back computer that runs a 5th injector. They need more fuel than the stock system can provide.
