I am trying to determine the minimum tools that should carry on the trail.  What tools does it take for a birfield and/or rear axle repair?  What does everyone take with them? :help: <Blackdiamond>
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

I usually carry a full tool set.


Here is the Camo Method for Changing Birfields

1. Pull locking hub cap and remove snap ring.
2. Unbolt seal/felts on back of knuckle.
3. Unbolt brake caliper and tie out of the way. (can be skipped if you have long brake lines)
4. Unbolt steering arm. (leave bottom knuckle cap alone)
5. Pull entire outer knuckle assembly off of axle.
6. Sawp in your parts.
7. Put it back together.


It's a big-time shortcut since you don't need to mess with the 54mm socket or wheel bearings.

Sockets:
1/4 inch drive SAE and Metric deep or standard socket sets
3/8 inch drive SAE and Metric deep and standard socket sets
3/8 inch drive socket style torx set from size 20 through 55 or better
1/2 inch drive SAE deep and standard socket sets
1 normal 1/4 inch ratchet handle
1 screwdriver type 1/4 inch drive handle
2 normal 3/8 inch drive ratchet handles
1 normal 1/2 inch drive ratchet handle
1 18 inch or longer breaker bar for 1/2 inch drive sockets (one that will fit in a tool box)
socket extension bars, 2 and 6 inch for the 1/4 and 3/8 inch drives and 2, 6 and 12 inch for 1/2 inch drive
Universal joint/swivel adapters for 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drives
1/4 to 3/8, 3/8 to 1/4, 3/8 to 1/2 and 1/2 to 3/8 inch drive adapters
open/box end Wrench set metric and standard
flare nut wrench set
Screw driver set including:
#'s 0 (normal handled), 1 (normal handled), 2 (short, normal and long handled) and 3 (normal handled) Phillip's head (Cross-tip)
1/8 (normal handled), 3/16 (normal handled) and 1/4 (short, normal and long handled) inch common (flat-tipped)

Fuses, both sizes, a variety including at least each used on vehicle

50 foot roll of 16 gauge stranded wire
More electrical tape
Jumper cables
10,000 pound or stronger chains, 16-25 foot each, one with chain with chain (grab) hooks, and the other with "C" (slip) hooks
pair of 10,000-20,000 pound safety chains with "chain unions" at each end, 6-8 feet long. Necessary for using tow bar and great for rigging for recovery.
20-30 foot recovery strap (2 inch or wider)
Quick throw rope. 30-50 foot. 8-10 MM climbing rope is best
Small Shovel (military "entrenching tool")
Warning triangles and/or flares
Blanket
Survival food - Military MRE's are great for "shelf life" and some come with heaters
bag of rags
BUNGEE cords....
jack stands
nylon or plastic tarp
100 foot roll of 550 cord, or clothes line size rope
water jug, 5-gal, collapsing
12 volt florescent drop light or 110 VAC if you have a power inverter
12 volt spot light if no light bar mounted lights.
vinyl repair kit
Flash light, at least a two "D" cell
Can of super-duper penetrant
Can of WD-40 or equivalent
pry bar
straight handled (compact) or normal hacksaw
measuring tape
duct tape
handful of zip ties of various lengths
hatchet or ax
hand (bow) saw
12V air compressor
work gloves (cloth and leather)
instant coffee
can of Gatorade powder

good gawd, I'd only consider HALF of that stuff for a weeklong expedition....

holy mother of all thats sacred , thats half the contents of my roll away Mac and about two shelves no room for cooler  , camping gear ,dog, and so on .

I don't carry much at all, you don't need that much. What I carry is based on many many many trips and has shrunk much more than it has grown.

Gotta have the hub sockets, 12mm, 14mm, duct tape, bailing wire, hammer, pliers/wire cutters, screwdrivers, not a whole lot more.
