1999 tacoma 3.4 v6 swap to diesel. engine choices?
« on: Mar 30, 2014, 04:27:25 PM »
I searched, researched and have spent countless hours searching forums, engine specs, and transmission options for my truck. I have a 1999 Tacoma with the 5vz 3.4 V6 engine and the a340h auto trans. I plan to go to a manual trans for ease of wiring and electronics complications. I had my mind set on a 1kz-te paired to a r150f transmission. But have seen other engines on here like the Mercedes during used as well. The 1kz would be the only Toyota diesel engine I would even consider. But I might consider a different brand of diesel if it would be simpler. I would love to go with a mechanical injection engine for simplicity if it didn't offset the simplicity of transmission and mounting issues.
Has anyone accomplished a diesel swap on my year model truck? I have yet to find anyone who has even attempted it here. I see people doing the 3.0 v6's but no 3.4 v6?
Any insight or help would be awesome!

You could look through the toyotadiesel.com forum although it is pretty dead since diesel toys bought it. It still has lots of great information archived though. I pretty much lived there when I was doing my swap.

I like this one but it would be complicated as you can see by the build. Thats what i would run except 4bt,FJ60 tranny/t-case, with FJ80 axles, 4-link it.

you can convert a 1KZ-TE back to mechanical injection  to make it a 1KZ-T which was available in europe in the early 1990s  but you need a mechanical injector pump   to replace the electronic pump, any of the L series pumps will probably do  Last year I replaced the 2.8litre 3L motor with a 1KZ-T  and i used the pump of the 3L  they replaced all the wearing parts the input shaft and the distributive head    and set it up to 1KZ-T specks

cavey - who did the repairs on your pump? Did you have any trouble when you swapped it over from electronic?

a place in Devonport  Tasmania on Stony Creek rd called  Statewide Turbos and Injection  phone number  03 64249611 it cost me $3300 AUD to convert the pump and service the injectors no issues were had going to mechanical injection because the vehicle was mechanical to start with and all the plugs on the 3L pump came out of the vehicle and all the ECU plugs on the 1KZ-TE  were removed because I didnt need them  although I have read on the new zealand surf forums they all have troubles because the ECU is linked to the transmission and they go to mechanical injection to run more boost  to stop the ECU going into limp mode from excessive boost  so they have issues with the ECU / transmission
