That's an interesting take on the "Credit" system. I hadn't heard that one before. There's a lot involved in the decisions, to be sure, but the bottom line is money. Toyota (and every other manufacturer) is in business to make money, plain and simple, and unless the sales figures will justify the cost of importing, smog legalizing, and passing US safety standards, not to mention the added taxes on foreign-made vehicles, we will never see the vehicle on these shores. Sure, it would be nice to have 450 hp japanese super-cars available, but there's no market - at least enough of one to justify the cost. It even happens here - remember we just kissed the Camaro goodbye.

So Quick and fun gas savers leave and get replaced by huge dangerous gas boozers. So what's up with all these SUVs then?

SUV's are a highly lucrative market segment for manufacturers. They have lower technology requirements due to lax mileage and safety standards, they're built on widely-used truck platforms, and there's a *huge* demand for them. That last part is key - demand. If the buying public demands it, they'll make it. Unfortunately for us speed freaks and gearheads, the buying public is not into sportscars much anymore.

Well my mother owns a V8 Tundra and it sure has helped us all out.

That would be sweet huh? An IFORCE 4.7L V8 Stuffed into a 79-83 Toy. Apart from the weight (which is alot less than other V8s), that would be SSWWEEEEETTTT!!!!

Chevy, Ford, even Mopar got on-board when they started issuing potent crate motors. I just put a multi-port fuel injected Dodge 360 Magnum crate motor in my CJ7. Why no aftermarket support from import manufacturers like Toyota?
That may be a stupid question, but I'm suprised that no company has filled the void with aftermarket resources for drivetrain swaps (wiring harnesses, motor mounting kits, etc). It's a lot of time and money to one-off any motor swap and adapt engine management systems or go with a stand-alone system.
