Spark plug reading
« on: Sep 14, 2014, 04:55:22 PM »
Motor is 84 with 86 fuel injection and electronics with 90+ upper intake/throttle body. I changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor today because I wasn't sure when the last time they had been changed was. I tried taking pictures of the old plugs but it's tougher than I thaught to capture what they really look like. Anyway number 1 was dark and wet looking on the electrode but not really on the ground, I'm not sure if it's fuel or oil.

#2 and 3 were what I would call normal even though the terminals were so loose they came off with the wires.

#4 was a little wet but only on the electrode not on the insulator like #1.

I expected after replacing everything that it would sound and run great. I haven't taken it on the road yet but running it in the garage it actually sounded a little rougher to me. Tps was recently set and in spec, timing is set, no stored codes. The truck has always smelt on the rich side to me but the tail pipe is clean, not black. What do you guys think?

Nothing jumps out at me looking at those. It is to be expected to see some oil fouling on these old engines, but that is not bad at all. they look good, and the red tint is normal. I would not be concerned with those plugs at all.

I pull plugs on a daily basis that make those look like new plugs. I wish I had a picture of the plugs I pulled out of a dodge van with 170k on the clock, they were original plugs, and not platinum! They were suppose to be changed every 30K.

I pulled the #1 plug today because out of the old plugs it looked the worst. This new plug only has 3 trips on it totaling maybe 15 miles so it's probably to soon to read? It has been up to temp with a total of maybe 1.5hrs run time.
