22RE Head Gasket replacement help needed.
« on: Feb 07, 2014, 05:28:45 PM »
To begin Im new to the inner workings of 22RE's.  I am in the middle of replacing my head gasket and have a simple albeit important question.  What is the best way to make sure the head bolt holes in the block are clear of all debris.  Correct me if Im wrong but dont the right side (passenger) head bolt holes participate in lubricating the rocker assembly and cam?  Im posting this because Ive never seen a thread covering this.  Thanks for everyone's help / input.

Compressed air to blow out the holes and make sure all of your parts are clean

dont forget to check the block deck surface and head with a straightedge for flatness and make sure no warping is going on.

not exactly on topic here but just throwing this in. If you haven't already, Zip Tie your timing chain to the sprockets in a few places to be sure you don't jump a tooth.  :twocents:

I would chase the threads with a tap then blow them clean with compressed air.   also check your bolts and make sure they havent stretched
