'98 3rz swap issue
« on: Sep 24, 2013, 10:10:56 AM »
Put in 4 runner 3rz
4 runner had auto trans.
 '98 4Runner 3rz  auto
OK now '82 4x4 with '98 3rz R151 trans.
Issue is throttle cuts out above 1/4 throttle.
Starts, idles and gains rpms at 1/4 or below but as soon as push gas pedal down eng sputters and backfire.
Rechecked all wiring.
Also couldn't find exact wiring for my ecu on "All data" website.

Scan gauge II reads 10 at idle to 70? At open throttle on TPS?
Fuel pressure holds at 60psi.

I know ppl sometimes run into issues with the auto trans wiring harness..it definitely sounds like it would be a sensor or maybe due to the auto trans harness. I was reading on a few of big mikes 3rz notes...do you have a manuao trans ecu?

park switch? when I did my 3rz swap, my donor was auto trans. I removed everything related to the auto trans from the wiring harness and didnt have to jump anything. Is your fuel pressure regulator working and return line to tank is in place?

Fuel pressure regulator? I think so, it idles and gains rpm on 1/4 throttle. Return fuel line in place. Drove donor before swap.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had same issue with a 98 2rz it was my fuel pump. Sounds like your fuel press is good. I also had a bad IAC valve bought an used throttle body with a good IAC and ran good ever since. I'm sure you kno this but if you open up your ecu there is a code next to each pin so you can see exactly what pin goes to what component.  I have the translations for the abbreviations if you need them

I had a 4runner with 7mgte swap.  obviously a vey different engine, but I had the EXACT same issue as yours and it was the air flow meter, or mass air flow, whichever one you wanna call it.  this could be the same issue for you.

I fixed my problem. I found that a wasps nest was in my fuel line. :rivers:
OK so I have used chilkat motor mounts and now my trans & transfer case don't sit level.
Any ideas why? Is this normal with the 3rz?

Every time I've put a 3rz in after bolting up to the motor mounts I set the trans like an inch and a half below the floor and call it good. It shouldn't tip back super bad but I think they dial little bit.

Did you read the "BIG write up" that shows the angle of the motor (stock angle)?
Does you motor have the same angle?
If yes and you have that set right I will shut up and go back to sleep.

I had a similair issue.  It was no big deal. I just had a buddy hold the motor over to one side while i tightened up the t case mount.  I started with the t case mount then tightened uo the motor mounts.  :twocents:
