Help with 22RE.. Please!!
« on: May 15, 2013, 05:42:22 PM »
Ok, I need some help here. BIL bought a frankenstein of a p/u. I personally wouldn't have bought this POS. Since I drive Toyotas, and have done a motor swap, he thinks I'm a Toyota Guru. I'm not, just got lucky on my truck.

But here is our issue. It's a 93 and it seems to be sluggish on the throttle till you get around 3000rpm's. Then it freaking takes off. We've checked for vac leaks. Used a volt/ohm meter and followed the FSM and checked every sensor. Good. But it ran better, not good, with the TPS disconnected.  Bleakhorizon worked on this rig before my BIL bought it, and he couldn't get it running right.

But in all the conversations we've had, I was told it was a 92. Until today, after halfway into taking the intake off, I realize it's not a 92, but it's a 93 which uses a different Coil and Coil Pack. Somebody told him that his truck did the same thing, and it was the distributor. So, we swapped out mine from a 91. It helped, but still the hesitation, sluggish till higher RPM's. So, my question is with the coil and coil pack. I know the 93 takes the square coil body and associated coil pack, and the 91 and lower uses the traditional round coil and associated coil pack. Is this our problem? Could it be that the ECM is trying to make the wrong coil pack work, causing it to be sluggish, and then launch like a rocket? Please help, I'm sick of looking at this truck.

If its a 92, there is no high mount brake light and it uses r12 for the ac, 93 has a high mount and r134. Maybe it just gets into its powerband at 3000? My 3.0 is like that
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

How's the timing chain?

Maybe it skipped a few teeth and the cam is retarded.

I haven't gotten that far.  But the truck is definitely a special one!!

It's been thru two new ones.  One before BIL bought it, and after.  And its dialed in.  Runs better without it plugged in.  But not good.

One thing I noticed today, one of the EGR bolts on the back of the plenum was broke off, so only one holding it on.  Maybe sucking air there, causing the issue?

mine does the same thing. has done it for year. I've replaced the tps several times, swaped intakes checked for vac leaks, swapped throttle bodies and still no change. I'll be watching this to see what you find.

Right now, I'm still trying to figure out :pokinit:.  There is so much more stuff on a 93 that isn't on my 91.  I'm trying to figure out if it's jumped a tooth or not.  But there is no markings on the timing chain.  So, I'm gonna have to get some better light and see if I can see a link that is colored differently than the rest.  And I'm read that the O2 sensor can be the culprit too.  But there are other little issues that I'm fixing along the way.

Chance the cam was changed? Too long a duration could have that effect, especially if no supporting mods/tuning were performed. The cam could be off a tooth in the retarded position, as mentioned by emsvitil.

Timing is on.  I gave up on this for now.  I was wasting too much time on the truck and nothing was getting done around my place.

It's got to be a very simple thing that I'm overlooking.  But since its nbot my rig, and I could be dropping $100s to try this and try that.  And I don' have that kind of money, and BIL just quit his job for the summer to take care of 400 acres of family property.  He has to clear off some serious timber while his dad is still able to do that kind of stuff.

From my guess, it was running fine till the PO rolled the truck, they did a cab swap.  And got rid of it when they couldn't get it running right.  Nothing like buying somebodies headache.   :shake_head:

I have a couple of ideas of what might be the issue, but when the whole cab has been taken apart and reassembled by ??  Who knows if those ideas would work.  Like I said, I never would have bought this truck, no matter how desperate I wanted one.  It's not even my truck, and I already have over $200 and three weekends of my own time and $ into it.    :conf:

I think he needs to invest into a coil and igniter for a 93, right now we have one for a 91 in there.  It all hooks up, and runs rough, but I know that 93 came out with a different style of coil/igniter.   The coil is a square style, but coils only discharge when the igniter tells it too.  I put a dist, from my 91 in, but they are all the same part number.

I'm not a mechanic, and I probably could have figured it out, if the truck wasn't hacked into.

If power is good at the upper end I could see sirduece being correct about a cam swap not tuned.  I could see timing a problem as well, but you said it was good.

What does it idle like?

Kinda sounds like the timing does not advance quick enough upon acceleration. Have looked at the springs in his distributer?  Maybe try "softer" ones and see what changes?

I am not an expert.  And have the 3.4L, but my experience shows me these Toyotas have a small powerband.  If I stomp at 2000rpm it doesn't answer hard.  If I wait till 2500 it answers like it should.

No springs in dist.  It idles fine till it warms up, then its a little rough, but the idle is at 500 rpms, so it's gonna idle rough.  Give it gas, and it takes some time for it to build up steam, but you can feel it slowly building up.  It took me awhile to find the different color link in the timing chain.  It was a pain.  But with two lights shining at the right angle it finally showed up.  And the timing mark on the crank was in the right location.  But it could also be the ECM giving issues too.

I guess I only know my motor.  What affects cold vs. warm idle?  ECU, thermostat, IAC, ummm....EGR, PCV.  Just thinking aloud here.  I don't even know if you have all these on  22re.

Oh, you said EGR.  Plate maybe loose?  Did you fix that?

On my 3.4 no vacuum leak ever affected performance or idle.  Starter fluid or propane canisters never showed me my vacuum leak either.  Hmmm.

Not my motor , but I like troubleshooting and learning.  Sorry I'm not more help.

Have you messed with that screw on the intake.  Is it the IAC or MAF right after the air filter?  It really changed the way my friends truck ran.

Whats weird was his EGR valve had a tapped hole in the top, with that was poorly threaded with a sensor of some type, and then a wire going from it to the firewall!!  :headscratch:   So, I put the one I had on there, along with my upper plenum.  His  had a broken bolt in one of the holes for the EGR.

Two cans of starter fluid and no vac leaks.

Did someone try and turbo it before?  Were they trying to install EGT to monitor it?

I guess I'm no help already.

Some of the 93 and later had a sensor in the top of the EGR valve.  But he doesn't have a wire that would go to it.  So, I took it out, to help eliminate a spot for a potential leak.
