u-joint bad ?
« on: Jun 13, 2002, 02:46:29 AM »
I have no experience at all with replaceing, or diagnosing u-joints.
I just bought a rear driveshaft from a local wrecker to replace the one I recently destroyed.
One of the u-joints may be bad, but I'm not sure.
There is no noticeable play, or slop in any direction on either u-joint.
One of them seems ok, moves smoothly and freely in both directions, with little resistance.
But on the other,  one side (direction) moves smoothly and freely, with little resistance.  The other direction moves smoothly, except for one 'spot' of noticeable resistance.  I greased both ends, but nothing changed.
Can I still use this u-joint for a while, or is this a sign of
impended complete u-joint failure ?

if it don't squeel run it ;)

Sounds like a needle bearing has some rust or something on it or is broken under the cap. You can get em out with a cheap arbor press or a socket and a hammer if you want to pull the cap off and see.
