U-joint or rag joint for steering
« on: Feb 27, 2017, 10:05:47 AM »
Is it worth converting from a rag joint to a U joint for my steering shaft after I relocated my steering box?

I've been trying to find the rubber for my rag joint. Also what are you doing in regards to the steering shaft

Go with Sweet MFG joints, that's what I did.
Solid pieces for sure.

Totally forgot about this post. I just melted the plastic out of it and bolted it up. I will eventually weld a spacer in to a new shaft if I can find one with a U joint locally lol

The main reason for a "rag joint" is the body moves different then the frame.

There were a couple on runners at the P-N-P on Antelope that still had the steering boxes in them. You could use a holesaw and cut one out of the sidewall of a tire. My buddy did it and it worked fine for him!!

Thanks, ill go check p-n-p, and drilling holes in rubber is a pain. Would be a good trail fix though

Really a set off punches used for gasket making, they went from 1/8th to 1". Those and a ballpeen hammer and you are set to make paper gaskets and punch holes in cork gasket material! Headgaskets were solid copper and if they were not scared up, you heated them to cherry red and reused them.

My buddy that restores antique MC's still does, pretty hard to find gaskets for a 1912 Indian!! LOL
