extended length front hub studs, '00 4X
« on: Feb 23, 2013, 10:46:31 PM »
clarification:

I have chosen this stud length because my intention was to run .25" spacers
on the front wheel hubs.
After all has been completed...
I realized a 50mm length would have been my better choice.

My factory Frt. hub studs were 30mm in length...
If not using .25" wheel spacers...
I would think 40-45mm stud length would work better for many alloys.
But stud length selection is dependent of the wheels center chunk thickness

So I installed some new, longer (lexus 55 mm) hub studs today .
they were a little longer then what I hoped
should'a been 50 mm instead...  but they'll work..

I had to bend (hammer) the backing plate
in a specific location, in order to insert the longer studs.
they just barely clear, but do

pics because...   ;)

backing plate bend location...

hammer time...

stud removed...

new stud being inserted...

how I pulled the studs thru...

studs installed...

this stuff helps slide that knurl home...

wheel reinstalled...

there are .25" spacers installed...
just not the billet ones I purchased.
farked that order up because I didn't pay attention,
and failed to account for the correct center bore diameter.
so I'll need to have muh billet spacer's machined out if I keep 'dem.

btw...   these are open end ET 6 spline drive lug nuts
just so it's understood, there's a :pokinit: ton of thread bite
  ;)

^ I've since painted the stud thread tips black
looks less obtrusive IMO...  maybe a pic of that tomorrow  :dunno:

-----------------------------

few questions...  if ya have the know !?

my front factory studs were only 30 mm long,
was thinking they were 40 mm.   sooo...

1.    what is the actual length of the rear studs ? 40 mm ?

2.    do the factory Rr. studs have a shank at their base ? how long ?

3.    what is the tacoma's front hub diameter ?  97.1 ? More ?

google search brought up too many answers
and they were inconsistent and possibly not reliable.
I could pull one and measure...
but was hoping to know, without doing that.

^ I'm asking specific to the 1st gen, early to mid
as they may be different on the later '01 - '04 tacoma

clarification would be appreciated  :)

--------------------------

here's some other misc. pics...

pics of the "no bueno" billet spacers  :(

Word of caution new studs settle, I would recommend re-torquing the lug nuts after about 100miles of driving. what are you torquing the lugs to? And why are you deciding to run .25 spacers?

Have you tried measuring the bore with a ruler to find out the diameter?

This is the reason why I love steel wheels on Toyota's.  Ever since I used to work at Les Schwab Tires, I never liked the fact that the studs were never long enough for me to feel safe selling or installing thick aluminum wheels on short studs.  If possible I'd always try to sell wheels that would take the ET conical style lugnuts.  Or I would try to push Weld or Centerline style wheels.  They had the thinner forged aluminum center section.  Never like the cast center sections on Toyota's.

always check muh wheel lug torque regardless
now I'll just feel smarter doing that    ;)

I purchased these wheels with the intent on rolling 285's
but ended up purchasing 295's instead.
being that the 295 is a little wider ( 'bout .25" )
the tires rub the frame a bit too much at full steer. lock.
Thought the spacers might help with the frame/tire clearance
bandaide I know...  but it'll be fine

3.75" backspaced wheels would be great
but I can't see paying the cost of new wheels for .25"
especially when these don't even have any rash on 'dem yet   ???

so I chose to try this out and see how it goes

had someone local, lathe the center bore out for $20.
they fit good...  stronger then the universal cast spacers.
Slightly thicker too... billet = 6.2 mm Vs. cast = 5 mm

goofed slightly, as the bore's were machined out to 108 mm ( rotor ID )
but I think it should've been 106 mm.    :hammerhead:

also painted the stud's thread tips ( outboard of the lug nut )
just thought it might look cleaner this way...
^ less corrosion maybe too

here's those...

For Sale:  4 ea universal 5mm wheel spacers (cast)
$ 20. shipped - L 48    :biggthumpup:

Tape weight on the outside of the wheel   :yikes:

funny...  and tho' it may surprise you
those sticky weights have held up to 4 trips to Moab...
and a whole host of local runs... rock gardens and what not.
Not these wheels...  but muh previous steelies.

They may not be purdy...
but better then those pound on weights I keep rubbing off

* be sure to prep the wheel's surface before sticking them on...
or they will fall off too !

It's a helluva lot smarter way for people who truly wheel their rigs, just damn ugly.  I have this conversation regularly with guys who buy tires for their rigs they obviosly use off-road, but some people still want old fashioned weights.

just damn ugly.
no doubt...
but often I see, that many hardcore trail rigs are hammer'd to chit
and sticky wheel weights really wouldn't diminish that much...  IMO

I always laugh at the folk that leave the trail to go home...
and complain of wheel shake all the way home.   Lol
