I always use a mig.  I think last i heard the favored rod was 7011 or 7016.  Im not very sure of it though its been a long time.

Are the spiders and carrier cast or forged?  If they're not cast I'd go with a good ol' 6010 or 7018.

As long as the spyder gears have a lot of weld on them keeping them from moving any welder should work as long as the welds penetrate :rockingout:.  A buddy of mine welded his rear up solid because he thaught it would break, the carier was solid weld and had to weigh in the area of 50 pounds.  What do you expect, he drives a Jeep.   :turtle:  :usa:

Mig will be the easiest, point and shoot don't get the carrier to hot and no clean up. I used some splatter protectant spary for mig nozzles to keep what dingle berries that there might be from sticking. Make sure you have it set to run smooth and hot enough to get good penitration. I gauge how much weld I need off of the factory welds on various parts of my truck by making mine twice as big as what I see in a simular area of my truck of course there are no welds in the carrier but you can estimate what you need from other stuff you've welded.  :twocents:

CLEAN!!! make sure everything is clean..brake clean I think works real well..Welds are much better when its as clean and oil free as possible..

I'd probably go with a nice hot pass of 6010, like 80-90 amps to really dig into the metal, then maybe follow up with a 7018 to reinforce.  I'd also spray the whole third liberally with an anti spatter spray.  It'll keep all the spatter from sticking really bad to all the inner parts.  After welding, clean the third as well as possible.

I have used nickel rods to weld diffs together, I also weld bolts in between the spiders to make sure it holds nice and strong. It has work on local speedway cars and a few of my trucks, never broke a single one.

Weld all of the spider gears inside the carrier together and then weld the big gears too the carrier itself that will make it nice and strong. we usally use a 6011 and then clean up the weld and then cap it with a 7018 too make sure its super strong and MIG welding i also agree with white that works great i MIG welded my rear and sticked the ft and i like the MIG alot better i set it up on about 21 volts and went too town i was getting great penetration, and it has held up great with tons and i mean tons of abuse!
good luck which ever way you choose.
Adam
If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.

Nickel rods are the best choice if the parts are cast iron, which I think they are.  In a pinch, Stainless rods are a good choice to weld cast iron because of the higher nickel content than in mild steel electrodes.

Definitly super clean and easy no slag to clean and a little less heat transfer, take 10 minute breaks or so between every couple of welds and do opposing welds to seperate the amount of heat build up to limit eliminate heat warp.
