« on: Apr 18, 2012, 08:22:05 PM »
i picked up a warn 8074 winch for 100 bucks, and im having a problem. it seems to only want to spool in, even when i push out. im thinking solenoids from what i have read, but ive never owned a winch and know next to nothing about them. any one have any ideas? id appreciate it

Is it a 8274? The upright type?

If it is, you should be able to pull the knob out to free wheel it out. If it doesn't power out, it is a wire, switch or solenoid issue. It's not the motor if it works spooling in.

Warn's website has tech info and schematics. Get your model and serial number off the winch.

no it is like the predecessor to the 8274. it looks the same, but it doesnt have a freewheel clutch(no knob) it only has power in and out on the remote, but both make it spool in. when i got it, i tested it out, and it was acting kinda weird, but we got it to spool in and out just fine. but now it only will spool in, even when i press the switch to the out position.

I know some of the older warns only would spool in and free spool out. Those were very old though. It's probably a solenoid

Can you post a few pics of the winch, solenoids, and control? Maybe we could help.

Give Warn a call. Maybe they could still help you out.

IIRC the 8074 is a factory optioned winch on vehicles from the "day" lol, specificly jeeps...

manual hand brake, no clutch, no power out either....

still decent winch, can be converted to the same as the 8274. . .
Those are some huge welds!

That's not a whole lot different than my 8274. I'm pretty sure those are just Ford type starter solenoids. Not much to them and not too expensive. (Just to clarify, for testing only)

Did you test them? They might click and sound normal but, have burnt contacts. Use a meter. Did you test the controller, wires and the connector?

Get back on Warn's site and look at the early 8274 schematics. Looks just like mine. I think the 8274-50 is different.

The winch is an oldie but goodie. You'll like it once you get it figured out.

12voltguy is an excellent source of information too.

Go on Pirate and check out Billavistas 8274 rebuild. Down near bottom shows how to test solenoids and wiring. Should be the same.
