starting issues
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:29:09 PM »
my 84 (carbed) dd is having issues starting. i think its fuel related. it starts fine most of the time but like twice a day it will not start. ill crank it on an off for 3-5 min and eventually it decides to start.the choke works, its getting spark and if i give it a shot of starter fluid it starts. i admit do to lack of time i havnt tried to hard to figure it out. i was hoping to get some ideas before i go after it.

cold start injector? have you noticed that it's hard to start up after it's cooled down and been sitting for a while?

My 84 had that issue too, would just pick a point and time randomly and would not start, never was able to figure out what was doing it but a switched inline passive electric fuel pump after the filter seemed to fix the no start issue. When it quit I would switch on the electric pump and it would fire right up.

i messed with it a bit today. when i go to start the truck i hit the gas pedal once to set the choke when i do this a little gas dribbles into the carb. i believe it should be a healthy squirt of gas. i cant remember what controles that. i guess its time to get out the manual.

Are you pumping the gas pedal once or twice before you go to start it? I know in my 82 if I didn't pump it a few times to squirt some fuel into the venturies it would fire up right away.

The mechanical fuel pumps take a little while to draw fuel up to the carb if they have been sitting too something to think about.

iv always hit the gas pedal once on this truck and it would fire right up. when my 80 was carbed i hit that one twice.  im sure the problem is the part of the carb that gives the first shot of gas on start up (acceleration pump? i think its called?) it used to give a good squirt now it just dribbles. at this point i have to hit the gas 20 times to get enough gas . i think if i replace that part ill be good.

Your right it's called the Accelerator pump basically a rubber and steel diaphragm that can go bad being cycled thousands of times. Have you pulled the filter assembly to see if fuel is being squirted into the venturies?

Check for fuel pressure.  And your cold start injector.  EFI you shouldn't have to pump the gas to start.  Could be pump getting weak or loosing pressure after sitting.  Check your ground wires too.

Curious, how does it run after it starts?  fine or crappy?

Interesting, most likely rules out my ideas then.  I would think if it were fuel related that it wouldn't run well at all, and definitely sputter under acceleration.

for what it is worth my ideas were, in no particular order: Check float level in carb (too high or too low go from there), check the function of the carb fuel diaphragm, test the fuel cut off solinoid, test fuel pump, check or replace fuel filter, check engine and cylinder head grounds.

All of these have given me hard starting issues.   :twocents:
