Electrical problem
« on: Nov 09, 2011, 08:19:20 AM »
I am working on a 88 x-cab p/u.  There is no electrical short but it eats batteries. The kid is working on his 4th battery in less than a year. Alternator is charging at the proper voltage. I've heard that the ignition switch sticks on everyonce in a great while causing a draw. Has anyone ran into this problem before?

A leaky diode in the alternator can drain the battery.

How did you test the alt?  Running it with nothing on?  At Idle?  Try it with the headlights on, heater on high, and wipers on.  And see if the voltage drops.

Your alternator can put out 12-14 volts all day long, but if your not putting out any amps, your toast.  Get the alternator tested.
