Odd electrical activity
« on: Jan 10, 2005, 07:48:24 AM »
My sister left me a message last night that on her 86 4 runner (22re) the charge batt light comes on, turnsignals dont work, gas guage and temp guage guit working?  I need to call her back with some suggestions any ideas to make me look smart?  :dunno:   I was going to suggest to start checking grounds, and fueses.  Other than the odd lighting as of last night it did run fine.

are the guages going sporratic, just jumping to life then dying repeatedly? if there doin that then the batery cables are rubbing something to the point where there is no more insulation left. if thats ur prob u can fix it for cheap with electrical tape wrapped around the bare wire spots. if her truck just flat out wont start but the battery is good then u've got the same prob

Not positive on the 2nd gen's but there is a groung grouping of wires that is at about the upper level of the driverside kickpanel.  That is the dash ground group.

Definately sounds like a dying alternator. Low amp draw accessories will still work ie: gauges, stereo, dome light. Turn signals take a bit of current to tick the relay over and over so they will slow down or not work at all. My truck ran for a few DAYS with a dead alt. Then things started dimming, the motor kept running until the battery went completley discharged, then nothing. I hear the Injected engines are a little more picky with voltage but I suggest having her drive it to autozone or napa or pepboys and have them check the system for free.
