Pulling a transfercase????
« on: Sep 16, 2002, 09:58:33 AM »
I found a local (pick and pull) salvage yard and located two toyota X-cases.   Here is the problem one is a late model carb. 85, and the other is a carb. 86.  Both of these cases have the forward shift levers.

I have never pulled a toyota case before and I don't know what I am getting involved in with the linkage issues how do I seperate it from the tranny (and can it be done without removing the tranny)?  Also any almighty guru's   know the sockets / wrench sizes required and any special tools needed to pull this case?  I would hate to get it half way out and run into a problem.

The guy at the yard said he would pull / sell it to me for a $150 ea, but since I am a cheap B  :shake: I am going to try and cut a deal that I pull and pay $100 ea.

I am building a SM420 / toy case drive train, then down the road stacking another case......   Is this the way to go or should I buy one of these put it together then look for a turbo case later that will already have the 23 spline shaft????  :dunno:

Thanks in advance.

Whatever you decide to do, get yourself 2 items at your local home improvement warehouse. #1, a carpenter's multiple pouch leather tool belt, #2, a cheap handtruck. Both will save your back and several trips back and forth to your vehicle.

Ooo,

Well Cant say for sure, I've never had to pull off my Tcase. And I dont have the Dual ultimate yet.... But I do have experience in the powertrain. I would say 12mm's 14mm's Aww hell I'd just pack my Metric Sockets and wrenches As far as special tools I got no clue....

Talk to marlin On the phone If you dont get the answers here, He know everything by heart If you know exactly what Yota i.e. 86 22R (Carb) SWB 4x4 5spd........

It seems to me that you want to build the main t-case first. There are a couple of issues though. If you mate to a 420 you need the 10 spline Marlin input. then later swap it to the front crawlbox. Yes a 23 spline is what you need/want but they can be purchased brand new (good price  from Marlin)  so that opens up the t-case options. If you eventually want a dual ultimate the 4.70 will help your gearing right now Either way you are looking at a new input gear.

The way I would do it is to get all the pieces and do it all at the same time.

Thanks for the input, I just looked at the T-case theroy like this.  I can get an 87 turbo case for $250.  I can't seem to find any toy cases here for less than $150 (or $100 if the pick and pull takes my offer).  So if I bought a regular case $150 and then a shaft from marlin for (I think) $165, then I am putting out a little more money than just trying to find a turbo case.

I can get a turbo case right now for $250 but it is a four hour (round trip) drive.  Is it worth it to buy the turbo case now, and throw the shaft on the shelf for later when I do the duals?

Anyone else have any special tooling issues???  Anyone know how to seperate the tranny and t-case properly (addressing the linkage issue)???

Thanks again
Dave

my "T" case is an older one but i can recomend a few things for pulling it.  the manuels say that the  transmission and "T" case come out as a unit.  but i didn't listen i just took off the cross member, lowered the back end and blocked the trans and unbolted the "T" case.
i think they were 14mm head bolts.  bring the basics just in case though.  also bring some channel locks.  you'll need them for the speedo cable and taking the shifter out.(unless that shifter comes out different than mine did)  it's like a cam lock deal that just twists a little bit and the shifter comes out of the top.(in the cab)  also the drive shaft bolts on mine are 12mm head bolts and nuts, so bring two 12mm wrenches.  i think the cross member bolts were 17mm.

but like Doc said just bring extra tools in the basic sizes.

10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19mm sockets and wrenches,  channel locks, and some wood blocks or jacks or something to brace up the transmission

removal:

first, get inside and remove the shifter boot and what not.  then remove 4 bolts holding the t-case shift lever in.
Crawl underneath, remove backup light and speedo cable.
drain fluid is probably a good idea.
remove drivelines, if front DC is good, buy it too.
remove the 6 bolts holding the t-case to the tranny adapter.
pull t-case backwards and out.
pat yourself on the back for successfully removing your first t-case.

take care...

If you put the 4.70 in the rear case you do not need a turbo case. If you put 4.70 in front you need the 10 spline input and 23 spline in the rear. If you are going 2.28 / 2.28 then get the turbo case. If you are putting the t-case on the back of the SM420 you need the 10 spline input and toss the 21 or 23 spline input. :dunno:
