Picked up a stock 1984 FJ60
« on: Nov 21, 2010, 08:35:34 PM »
I picked this up about a month ago for 1500.00.  The owners that I got this from realized that they couldn't drive a manual transmission so it sat for almost 2 years before I bought it about a month ago.  Since they couldn't drive it to get it smogged I offered 1500.00 for it realizing the risk of buying a rig not currently smogged.  So far I have replaced the cat, muffler, spark plugs, cap, rotor, changed the oil, I'm waiting on 10mm plug wires from summit racing.  The O2 sensor mount on the new cat is different than the old one so I need to figure that out as well.  I'm trying to make sure this thing passes smog when I go to get it done so that the DMV can complete the transfer of title.  The exhaust smells a little rich so I'm pretty sure I need to do a lean drop procedure on the carburetor.  I did a compression test on the 2F before I bought it and all cylinders are showing between 135-140 lbs.  I think I got a good deal as long as I can get it to pass smog.  I want to do a spring over axle conversion to clear 35" tires.  I have seen a lot of build threads where guys have put the 4bt in these things and I thought that this would be a good candidate.  I have kinda been getting tired of the 2 door 4Runner and have been looking 4 something with a little more room I considered the 90's runners and swapping in a toyota or mercedes diesel, but the landcruiser came up and I decided to go with it.  I kinda want to sell my 854Runner to pay for this new build.  The carpet was really bad and the rear panels were really hacked up from the previous owner trying to install speakers so I ripped the carpet out and started fabbing up some new rear panels.

When I get my other digital camera fixed I'll take some better pics, these were taken with my Iphone.  I put the spare from my 4runner on the passenger rear to make a bet with my bro that it would fit he said it wouldn't.

I might have access to an OM617 for free so I might consider putting that in either my runner or this new FJ60.  Luke at 4x4 labs said that if I was happy with the power of the 2F then the OM617 would be comperable with a little better fuel mileage.  So the mercedes might be more likely than the 4bt at this point.  When I told luke over the phone when we were talking about fuel mileage he couldn't believe that the 2F in the bone stock FJ 60 was getting 16mpg.  Luke said that the OM617 with the size weight and bigger tires on the FJ60 the mercedes probably won't get much better mileage than 16-20 mpg's.  If the OM617 is only gonna get that kinda mileage I might reconsider and possibly put the 4bt in.  Don't know what to do at this point it all kinda hinges on passing smog and selling off some other toys.

I went on a fishing trip to New Zealand in February of 2009 and got hooked up with a vet. who likes to go fishing as well.  His DD is an 87 landcruiser which is turbo diesel.  His rig kinda inspired me to convert a rig over here in the states the picture shows the back of the 87 cruiser.  It's bone stock but runs pretty good.  One drawback to it is that it only has a 2 speed tcase in and out lame for crawling.  He likes it though.  I was trying to tell him about dual cases and he didn't want anything to do with it.  I think that some transmissions and tcase combos are not available here in the states, I've never seen another cruiser with a case like that one but maybe they are here.  The second pic is just to show how good the trout fishing is and is well worth the trip.

I trailered the 60 down to another forum members place in madera and copied all his vacuum lines because the previous owners had this thing all screwed up.  I also found out that there is a recall on theses FJ60's so I've got an appointment tomorrow at Michael Toyota to get new rear seat belts and a new fuel tank and filler lines.  The next thing to do will be to purchase a carburetor rebuild kit.  I'll be looking for someone or a shop to rebuild my carb so if anyone knows who does a good job in the fresno area I would greatly appreciate the contacts.

Nice find.  I got a buddy that has a FJ62 that I want bad, but he won't let go of his old college cruiser.  I would love to get a bigger rig for my family too.
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

4THEWKN~9/17/2006  If it wasn't for you, I'd be driving something other than a Toyota!

Yes that is correct, I saw it on manning and frankwood before it was for sale and thought it had been sitting for quite a while and wondered if they would sell it.  I drove by it all last semester and then one day I saw that it was for sale on craigslist.  I wondered if it would still be there the next time I was back in reedley, it was so I stopped by and called em.  Month later it was mine for 1500.00 although it was advertised for 3500.00.
