Normal valve noise?
« on: May 12, 2011, 10:50:39 AM »
While replacing the valve cover gasket yesterday I decided to adjust my valves. The intake and exhaust setting were so tight that I couldn't get the .008 into either so I adjusted to .008 intake and .011 exhaust. Now my once "quiet" 22r sounds like a diesel and from what I can determine from searching around this is likely due to deformed adjusters hitting the valves at a different angle and making noise? I also already tried loosening the valve cover hoping it was just too tight, no luck. The truck does run better though but now this clatter is driving my crazy, should I just try new adjusters?

Pull them out and see if they are grooved. If they are replace you will never get a true setting if they are grooved.

May be a stupid question, but you adjusted the valves at TDC correct?

I adjusted them warm, not hot, but not cold either. Ill check them for grooves next week when I have time to do it, had I know of the groove issue I would have looked yesterday. And yes they were adjusted at the proper points on the cam lobes, even rotated and checked them all again.
