i feel your pain!  the engine i just rebuilt has a water jacket that has crept to just before the fire ring...i'm putting a stop to that by using ARP studs, a good head gasket and good coolant!

you could probably have that welded, or if it's a late(85-newer) head you might even check into engnbldr's NEW heads.  i think they're around $400 loaded in stock configuration

This was an engnbldr head with less than 8k on it, all I can figure is the head gasket ring was bad before I even put on.? one of the oil jacket holes opposite from the pic blew out of the gasket too causing all the coolant to hit my oil pan. Head is good, not warped thank god. I did a quick dye job looking for cracks & I didn't find any so new HSK gasket it's going back together.

Block is an 88. the ARP bolts I have don't bottom out.
It was a combination of a things that I believe cause the gasket to go. My torque wrench wasn't calibrated and I was about 15Lbs light on the head bolts. That's what I get for dropping it during the rebuild last year!  I bought a new one yesterday and have since pulled the pan and re torqued the main caps and rod bolts too. They were in spec so no trouble there. I also believe the gasket ring itself was weak or cracked when I originally installed it. The head is in spec(No Warping). From the time I noticed something wrong to the time I shut her down she pumped about 1 qt of coolant into the pan. Very little came out the tail pipe. I Didn't let it get too hot, thank god.

Just got my head back from the machine shop, figured while I had it off I'd at least have it checked out-nothing wrong with it, The guy at the machine shops said it looked like it may have been detonation that caused the gasket to go. Too much lugging the engine or it could have been a crap gasket to begin with. Oh well off to work!
