Ultimate: don't pay cable or sat. for TV thread!!!!!
« on: Jan 04, 2006, 07:19:09 AM »
Werd, so I loked up the cable company in Wichita and it is COX.  I have COX up here and they suck.  I don't want to give them anymore of my money, so I started to do ta researchin.  Wichita local stations broadcast free-air HDTV and Digital, so I am thinking of buying an HDTV w/ tuner and getting one of them amplified antennae.  They have indoor and outdoor, etc, etc.  I was wondering if anyone here has gone thi route or has any experience with a free-air antenna.  Specifically, which ones work best, pick up the most channels, etc.

When I was a kid we used an antenna. We could only pick up 2 and half channels.I do live in the sticks though.I don't know what it would be like in a city.I wouldn't think it would be much better as far as selection goes.I have Directv now.I like it,I have a TiVo reciever and a regular one.I highly recommend the tivo. The abilty to record every episode of a show without having to set it every time, being able to pause/rewind and having slow motion is awesome.

Don't expect to get more than around six channels.  ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, and usually a couple PBS channels.

Flourman's right. My parents have that cause they're too cheap to pay for cable but can afford a $5000 TV.  They get the major networks and 4 PBS channels.  It's the same as regular 'ol TV, plus there's still only SOME programs broadcast in high def.  The rest are just digital.

I've been doing a lot of reading and from what I can gather there are many different antenna types and some work better than others in different areas.  They recommand you try a couple different ones before you give up.  They also say that most people try to use the antenna with their standard coax cable and the signal degrades over the cable.  Switching to a higher quality cable can sometimes gain you an extra couple channels of reception.  That ant. above is only 40 bucks so I may give it a shot.  If I can't find an antenna worth it than I'll just return em and call the sat. company.  The office says sat dishes are ok under 1 meter wide.

cteng, yes you can pay all this $$$ for an antenna and receiever, yeah.. you'll get HD but your only going to get offair signal so your not going to get very many stations.. its a waste of money if you ask me...

whats wrong with your cable now?  whats it doing/ not doing. I might be able to give you a little friendly advice on how to fix it or tell you exactly whats wrong.

Seriously man, you'll only end up with a few channels and most programs still aren't broadcast in HD, they're digital.  ;)

Just wait till a good ole' Kansas thunderstorm comes through.  The TV will flicker every time it lightnings and your reception will be crap until the storm is over.  Trust me, I grew up with an antenna, my parents didn't decided to get a dish until I was a senior in high school (around 6 years ago).

One of my cronies has HDTV and it's good for our area. When my  b00+leg :pokinit: is done, I'll probably run with the HDTV for what it's worth  :dunno:

I don't watch so much TV (specially the dumber cable only channels) that I would really miss much.  Long as I get the major networks for football and stuff.

I will deal with that issue when I get around to it...can you get the YES network in KS would be a more important question.  If not, can it be streamed over the interweb?  Hmm I need to check this out.

You can go through life being scared of the possible, or you can have a little fun and tease the inevitable.

Give a man venison, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to hunt Blacktail, he'll be frustrated for life!
