One very important thing to remember when putting larger tires on an IFS rig and wheeling it, idler arm gussets. You will curse me later if you don't.

You can still bend an idler arm with a gusset, I bent one w/the Downey gusset, and wore out another at the pivot.  The best thing I have found is to buy a Moog idler arm w/a lifetime warranty, if they still come with one.  I haven't had to pay for a new idler arm in 13yrs, but I have exchanged 3 of them during that time, 2 on my '90 w/33's and one on my '91 w/35's.

Rim width and back spacing will also effect the overall tire you can run before needing to modify the wheel wells.  On my '90 32x11.50 on 15x8's w/3.5 BS rubbed on the body seam, but buddy w/92 cleared the same tires w/stock Toyota rims(15x7 w/4" BS).

On my '91 I am running 35's on 15x10's w/2.5" BS.

To get them to clear I used a 2" BL and 1.5" BJ spacers, and beat the fire wall back to the body mount.  I carry spares for everything, but haven't broke a CV even with an auto locker up front.  The only thing I have broke was a tie-rod end, but the breakage wasn't caused from the tires, given its age and conditions under which it broke, I think it would have broke with 28" tires.

Thanks, and yes it is still IFS.  4yrs ago when I started it I figured on SAS'ing it by summer of '08, but since it works good enough to wheel the Rubicon & Fordyce creek trail,(granted it is more work) and works great for winter snow wheeling, I haven't seen the need for the SAS, yet.  Of course if my buddies decide they want to start going back to the Hammers, or start going to Moab every year, an SAS would have to be done.  I also have picked up a few more restoration projects, the newest is a '37 Plymouth(all original), so my wheeling hobby has kind of taken a back seat.

I run 37" PitBull Rockers with trimming and a 1" body lift - which was only installed for the drivetrain tuck.  I beat the crap out of the stock IFS that has nearly 300k on it and have yet to break anything up front, still on the originaly idler arm without any gusseting.  The front diff is open, along with no increase in CV angles is what I think keeps it alive.  When it breaks I have all of the parts to do the SAS, so I am not nice to it.
