Topic: NEED IDEAS!!! Timing wont advance 22re

Ok so i did an efi swap on an 84 truck using all 93 efi parts. The motor is hard starting and the timing wont advance. As soon as you start to open it up it backfires and wants to die. I put a timing light on it and its not advancing at all. I have swapped out the dizzy and the coil-ign. Im really stumped on this one. Im also using an auto trans engine harness if that matters. Any help is appreciated.

do you have the distributor set at 5*??  not sure what else to offer

Yes.. With a timing light on it the mark doesnt even move with rpm

Have you tried a google search?  You might try "timing won't/will not advance on toyota 22re" and see what comes up.  Could have a bad sensor that's not allowing it to advance

This guy had the same issue and it turned out to be a faulty ignitor.  Took me 1 minute to find

I did search google. Found that thread but if you read my og post you will see that i have already swapped the ign with a known good one.

You didn't say it was a known good one, just that you swapped it out.  If you're like a lot of guys on here, you have parts laying around from rigs you've parted out, so there was the chance that you could've swapped in another bad one.  I found a ton of other threads, and pirate has tons of threads to sift through, so I'm sure you can find your answer with some more searching if you've pushed the limits of your troubleshooting abilities.  Have you checked the fsm that's linked on here?

Why dont you just work on getting high steer on your truck. Instead of trying to be a know it all little bad ass.

I know this is kinda an old thread. BUT did you time it with the plug jumped? and is your TPS adjusted? I know dumb questions but just trying to help anyone else searching for answers.

It acts like the plug is always jumped...... And yes the tps is adjusted. It has major grounding problems. We are going to get another cab harness. Thanks for the help tho.

I had that problem last time....when I changed out a bad injector seal and plenum gasket, I forgot to tighten the ground wire under the intake manifold. It would start but sound like fuel or vacuum problem and if I gave it gas, it choked. I back tracked and found that. Tightened it and problem went away...

Thanks man. I have swapped the motor harness and checked all grounds. Im sure it has a grounding problem in the cab. The cab harness i have has been "stripped" By someone who had no idea what they were doing.
