HELP!!! 22re not pumpin fuel NEW DILEMNA
« on: Nov 30, 2010, 10:35:55 AM »
1988 Toyota Pickup 22re 5speed, Just swapped my 85 4runners 22re ito it.

Ok I turned the key to start position and fuel came shootin out of the main feed.

Only if I turn it all the way to START fuel shoots out. Isnt fuel supposed to shoot out even if engines off and ignition is in the ON position?

It didnt crank over and I realized that it has clutch start cancel so I pressed clutch start cancel, then turned the key to start position and everything went black.
no lights
no anything at all.

WHAT HAPPENED?

I'm kind of an electrical noob so thanks for all the help

if everything went black, check your battery connections? check that your charged?

make sure you have a good BLOCK ground (the main negative cable) and make sure there is a good body ground to the battery as well,

check your positive to your fuse box and your positive to your starter?
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

Neg connection was bad. It cranked

But why does it only shoot out fuel when I have key to start position? Is that right?

I think so... I think thats toyotas failsafe for fire protection.... it will pump fuel in the START position and once the air flow meter opens... that way if your in an accident and the afm closes... it will turn off the fuel pump

Its working right the fuel pump will only run for 10 or 15 seconds unless the engine is running
and when the engine dies the fuel pump shuts off

I will give an update,

He got as far as he was going last night?

I think he was wanting to CHECK the EFI system last night. this is a swap, so he was peicing it together.

We kinda got stuck with need to know info only (maybe even a little less then need to know)

I dont think he has actually fired up the engine yet, BUT he gets fuel pressure WHEN the truck is told to put on the fuel pump.... so until he gets farther in the swap, we wont know much more?

Truck starts and runs. After it sits a few minutes it takes awhile to start. Losing pressure I think.

after it sits at idle it dies ?
like HOW LONG after it sits 10 min or more ?
could be the fast idle switch or something else

Ok I started it again and it took about 4 seconds for it to start. Abnormal because it would fire right up before. Then I turned it off a few seconds later and tried starting it again and it struggled for afew seconds like it wasnt gettin enough fuel but eventually started. Why is it
doing this?
I'm assuming it's losing fuel pressure but why?

pluged fuel filter or weak fuel pump check pressure with key on not running should be 33-38 psi and then check while running should be 27-31 psi with regulator attached without fuel reg attached 33-38 psi

I'll drive it around the block tomorrow and see if it feels like it's gettin enough fuel when I really stomp it. I revved it a little today and it idles perfect.
