This time of year, big problems.  Summer sun bodes well for bare metal  :yesnod:

I guess it could work but if you have any body filler under the exsisting paint it will look like @$$.  If you pull it off it woud be unique though.  I sprayed Vansickles tractor paint with hardener on my 4Runner tub.  Super cheap and it turned out looking great. They sell some laquer clear coat that can be use with the hardener too.  It's only like $25 per gallon.

Clear coat isnt ment to stick to metal.  It wont last......It will start to separate from the metal and leave bubbles then flake off.

A custom paint mfg. "House of Kolor" makes a clear metal primer that can then be clear coated with automotive clear. Ask at your local auto body supply store or "coastairbrush.com". A new metal looking paint might also be an option, I saw it at SEMA last year.

Foose has one of his older chevy's painted that way.  Be warned its EXTREMELY expensive stuff.   There is a paint from ppg which is close to the look of bare steel but it too isnt cheap.   If you want the look of bare steel then its gonna cost ya.

I saw this car at the Del Mar Good Guys car show last April and it was painted with some sort of chrome paint - you might want to look into it.

This is what I was concerned about. I will look into it more about the clear primers and whatnot. I think it would be so sick. But I know my truck has some rot on it, mainly in the bed luckily, where the usual bed rot is. That area will need to be addressed.

Goat there may be a clear out there designed to stick to any surface but I highly doubt it since clear isnt really a paint.  Even decent ppg paint will not last on a pure metal surface.

  Thanks, I was suprised at how nice it turned out.  The hot rod guys use the paint alot.  It was probably a waste of time on a trail truck but I was swaping bodies and had to graft an entire front clip/core support...  It was many different colors.  It was all stripped down with no trim or rubber so it was just too tempting not to spray it all one color.  I just didn't want to spend much money on something I was going to beat on.  With the catalyst/hardener the paint gets rock hard and is suposed to be as good as regular automotive paint as far as UV resistance/fading, etc.  Time will tell there.

It took me several coats to figure out how to make it lay down good.  I ended up thining it a bit more than the manufacturer recommends and it layed down perfect.  All told there is about 3-4 coats on most of the body panels.  I wet sanded it and polished a bit and it looks way too nice for what it is.  You could shave in it, put your contact lenses in, pluck your nose hairs, whatever...

I probably have about $200 in it with abraisives and everything.

I spent less than that with Ditzler paint/abrasives/ masking/ tack cloths/ primer/ putty on my old '88 back in 1995.  It had pearl in the paint too.  It was originally dark blue, and we painted it a similar shade - just with pearl essence paint.  It looked black at night and either light or dark blue in the day - depending on which way the sun was shining on it.  My painter added some extra hardener in the paint to get it to lay down nice.  It was a real pregnant dog to color sand and polish though because a lot of fish eyes appeared in it as it was drying.
