no warm start
« on: Sep 26, 2010, 11:59:52 PM »
Hey guys I am new to this forum in hopes of fixing my 85 4runner.

On cold starts the things runs awesome, however on warm/hot starts it doesn't I have fuel and I have spark. I'm currently sitting in a Del Taco parking lot in flagstaff AZ. trying to figure this out. I have had many toyota people try and help me out with it as well as using your and many other search buttons.

I have spark and I have fuel. I have no way of checking compression as of right now because i'm in a parking lot at midnight on a sunday. it's been doing this to me a lot, I have no idea what it can be. but something I just figured out is there is steam coming out from the intake manifold. I'm sure that it a dead give away to somebody out there. I can't afford to just throw parts at it either. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Phill

Are you sure its not gas, thats backfiring out of the carb? this happens when ur timing is advance Waay to much like 40+ the funny thing is if it starts it will run, just wont start sometimes. Only other things i can think of are choke not opening at all when its hot. try to pin it open all the time with bailing wire or something. mines been like that for 2 years and works fine. Also could have something to do with ur thermo sensor on the intake. thats my  :twocents:

Thanks for the reply man, i'm sure nothing is backfiring out of the carb seeing as its the EFI 22re. I'm about 98% sure the timing is good because I thought the timing was off and reset it all from the chain to the distributor. I think there is a coolant leak or something along those lines near the intake and the water vaporizes floats to the top of my intake manifold and then turns back to water choking the engine out.

hows your coolant level? maybe youve got a blown headgasket and when it gets hot stuff is expanding and loosing compression....

My coolant is slightly low but I don't believe it's my headgasket. because I was having these problems before, and I thought it was the headgasket so I pulled it and put a new one on, the old one looked pretty good too. and now i'm having the same problem

This is a common problem with the 22r and 22re's Google it and you will get a hole list of things to try.
If you see it, its for sale.

I know it would happen to hondas, 90-93 accords mostly, the main efi relay that controls the fuel pump would "heat" soak and with a break in the solder it wouldnt start. Sometimes igniters will do that too.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?
