Leak-proof fuel filter....
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 04:32:54 PM »
I think I'm smelling a hint of gasoline from the right-front wheel well.....

So it's probably the fuel-filter fittings.    But  no problem is visible.

When I first installed it, I tightened the banjo bolts to a reasonable level, and it seeped.

So I really torqued the sucker down.   (hopefully I can get it off)

Anyway, additional torque isn't the solution as I probably have too much already.

I was thinking of smearing some hylomar on the copper gaskets.

Or try to find so rubber O-ring lined copper gaskets (I've seen them for motorcycle brake lines (to small for fuel filter))

Or softer copper

Or

Reaneal the copper gaskets you have(which should every time you reinstall them). To aneal them, hang them on a piece of wire, heat to a cherry red, let them cool. They will be "dead soft" again and should seal fine. I work on Classic MC's and there are a lot of copper gaskets on them. I had a friend ask me why not just go buy some new ones, it is real hard to find headgaskets for a 1913 Indian!!!!!

They may have started off new, but I'd bet dollars to donuts they're now deformed from over torquing, but there's a chance the surfaces weren't clean enough.

Glad I saw this thread. I like the thought of annealing. We do some sort of annealing here at work on some of our subassemblies for medical devices.

When I get my motor in, I will be installing my fuel filter on the inner fender for easy swaps. Ed did you put your fuel filter in the stock location? If so, it must be a pregnant dog to get to. Right?

Also did you buy a factory Toyota fuel filter or an aftermarket one?

Yep, stock location above the starter.

Aftermarket, think it was a Wix; which I've never had any problems with.............

I had to torque the HELL out of my fittings for my Wix fuel filter when I installed it. And luckily, I mounted it on the passenger inner fender and I could see the leak.  It was spraying a stream out of the sides of the filter. I had to put what felt like 100 ft. lbs. of torque on both sides of the fuel filter to make it stop leaking. And this is with brand new copper washers. But all is good now.

Which comes back to the need to anneal those suckers. I do as suggested above with a propane torch, only after they change color I drop them off the wire into a cup of room temperature water. They also need to be flat on both sides. File any big stuff off, then emery paper on a piece of glass. Sand until they are bright all the way across, on both sides. Clean, and install.
