Missing detent ball or broken spring
« on: Jul 08, 2010, 01:33:58 PM »
This is the diagnosis from a transmission shop on my tranny popping out of first. Is it a bad idea to keep driving it until I feel like pulling the tranny, or would that cause more damage? It's fine If I just hold it in first.

Also, I'll check my FSM tonight, but is it a pretty simple job to replace a detent ball & spring? I just rebuilt my transfer case and that was pretty straightforward, so I'm guessing this would be too, but I'm not sure. I mean simple aside from the pain of having to pull the transmission....

This is an L52HD.

i know on the r150f the detent balls and springs are accessible from the outside you'll need a "magnetic finger"

based off your other thread, you might as well stop driving it and get it to marlins shop..... have you contacted anyone from the shop yet about it?

L52 it's not accessible without taking the tranny out. No, haven't talked with them yet but I'll be calling tomorrow if I get a chance. Won't be getting it to Marlin's shop, since I live in Montana. This is the crappy thing about getting a "modified" transmission...if there are issues (which there really shouldn't be so soon), it's going to be a bit harder to figure out what parts are right.

There's a chance that all my other noises and rumblings are other parts of the truck. I just rebuilt my t-case, and though I feel that I did everything right, it was my first one, so who knows, maybe I messed it up. But my tranny is definitely popping out of first, and neutral feels very strange right now. Sucks cause this is my DD and only vehicle.
