rear axle ID (need clarification)
« on: Feb 22, 2010, 07:14:49 PM »
So I have a '96 non-TRD tacoma 4x4, I want to order 5.29s for it, but on Marlin's site there is a choice for 8" or 8.4" gears, yet What i've read on pirate4x4 and other places, I'm getting conlficting info that it's not actually a 8.4, but an 8" blah blah, so do i get 8.4"s from marlin or what? I know this is newbiesc, but i need some clafication. Any other links would help also.

All Tacomas '95.5-'04 that did not come with a factory locker are 8.4".  The ones with a factory locker and 4Runners are 8" all the way, so that may be where you get some conflicting answers.

ok, thats what i thought, because you can put a TRD e-locker in a mini-truck 8" diff right? (with a little rework, but nothing MAJOR) Or am i totally off base with that one?

can the non trd tacoma axles (95-04) be modified to use the e-locker? would it be easier to swap in a trd tacoma axle?

they "can" be modified, but Oh holy hells its to much work to even begin even as a super skilled fabricator/engineer.

It would be better to find a tacoma e-locker housing!
But, one could use a 86-95 rear housing, cut it up for the locker kick out and run ..uhh.. 1.5" spacers

That would be an easy..ish route

Gabriul, thanks for the info. very helpful.  not being even a half skilled fabricator, I will research one of the other two routes.  If it looks like it will be even close, in costs, I may just busting out for the ARB route.

it will be close on costs and just overall insanity. my friend put one in his 90's pick up but ditched it for a new housing and arb. i don't think he will do that again..lol
