82 pickup
« on: Jan 26, 2010, 08:28:31 PM »
I have an 82 toyota pickup 4x4 that i have gone through 2 transmissions in the last year or so.  i have been told that this has a G-Series transmission.  first of all is this correct?????  and if so i have heard that these transmissions are pretty much junk?  i am going to rebuild and upgrade a new 22r motor for it and want to put in a new transmission as well.  what is the best option of transmission to bolt up to a 22r, or 22re haven't decided wether im going with the R or the RE but i believe the transmissions will bolt to both.
Thank you for any help with my problem.

82's came with either L43 or L50 or L52's. look for a cast iron tranny. they tend to have a bad track record.  no sure about the g series. i'm sure someone will chime in.
Let's put a smile on that face!

the 82 came factory with a L50 trans maybe if it was a late 82 it might have had the L52  both look identical -->

the G52 is no stronger than the L series but is aluminum and will look like this -->

as far as the 22R  all of the transmissions in these early trucks will bolt to both the 20R and the 22R

the big HOT ticket is to use a early 22R block under your 20R intake and head, ive run one and its a AWESOME engine, i broke my speedo cable 3 times while running that engine over the course of 2 years when i finally dropped a valve at 7200 rpm   i cried for 3 days

if your trans is indeed a L series keep it till it wont stay in gear then get Marlin Crawlers exclusive L52HD,  it is basically a w56 gear set stuffed into a highly modified L52 housing :disturbed:  I have one myself :disturbed:

thank you it is indeed the L series.  I do have a 22r in it right now and just recently started looking into the 20r head on it and i think that is the plan.  but i want to get a strong transmission that will bolt up and when i pull my motor and tranny out i can just swap right in.  if i have to modify a little to get the best tranny i will but im not sure what the BEST transmission is.  Isn't the R150 i think? supposed to be one of the best?  will it bolt to a 22r block without an adapter?

am i correct in saying that the r151 is one of the best or would i be better off just putting the L52 Heavy Duty from Marlin in?
