Need Help 3.4 L V-6 into 1988 4Runner
« on: Dec 04, 2004, 01:58:50 PM »
Hey guys:  I'm new to this internet chat room stuff, so bear with me if I seem a little weird.
I recently picked up a 88 4runner with 292,000 miles from a guy who bought it new.  The manual tranny was locked in 3rd gear so I got it real cheap.  I'm trying to drop in a 3.4 L V-6 with a manual trans from a 2000 4runner.  My problem is that the oill pan won't clear the center steering link, also looks like I might have a clearence problem between the right side upper A arm and exhaust cross over flange.  Do any of you know of someone who has tried doing a swap like this and how they got around these problems?  I ordered an adapter from Marlin Crawlers so I can install my old gear driven T case onto the tranny and get the final drive exiting on the right side.  I'm just wondering if anyone is manufacturing some after market parts so I don't have to.  Thanks Stoutman :help:

Damn thats a tall order to fill.  Nice project though Id love to see pics of it step by step.  ifssucks put a 3rz in his rig and ran into the same issues with the steering link that you are.  Im not sure what he's doing to get around the problem but it never hurt to ask.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

get a body lift and raise the engine mounts till the pan clears the steering
87 runner, 4" trailmaster lift, 33" TSL/SX, 5.29's V6 e-locker, 22re that cost too much

You need an oil pan and all pickup components from a 2wd T-100.

Check out Tacoma Territory for more informaion.  Or call Off-Road Solutions for all of your needs for this swap.  They should have everything you need.

As for your oil pan thats and easy one. bkg has the right idea, go buy any T100 3.4 2wd oil pan and pick up tube (dont forget the dipstick)
and your set. Now as for as that IFS stuff goes just dump it its no good for crawlin anyways.   Ok so you dont want to do that yet OK.  The only thing that I can think of is to get a tall suspension lift to get more clearance under the motor.  And maybe ditch the cross over and have each side go straight back.

Dudes:  Thanks for all the input.  Some great ideas.  I looked at a two wheel drive T-100 that a guy has down the street yesterday but I don't think the back of the pan will clear the diff. pumpkin.  However I got to thinking today about a T-100 4X4 oil pan and stopped some poor fellow on the street and he let me check his out.  It has a concave area to allow for the center steering link, I think that it will work.  As for lifting the body up that high, I'm sure that would work but I don't want that much elevation.  I'm going to be using this rig for camping in primitive areas but I have to drive it there on the highways.  So I don't want to get to radical.  However looking at all the cool rigs that you guys have made and the fun you look like your having crawling around gives me ideas about making a crawler out of a 71 Hilux I have and an 81 4X4 chassis that's just sitting in the back yard.  Maybe later first thiings first.  Thanks again.  Stoutman.
