Shaking at high speed
« on: Sep 21, 2009, 11:22:52 AM »
So I went to Southlake Tahoe this weekend in my 84 pick up and when I was coming down the steep hills my truck would start shaking when my speedometer hit 75... which means I was probably going 85. Does that happen to anyone else? Is that normal?

It could be several factors.... tire balance, steering stabilizer.. is it only when you hit brakes? Does it start at high speeds only?....

I doubt it would be your tires unless you also feel them in the 50-60 mph range where tires generally are at their worst.  My tires are not balanced perfectly and run terrible about 55 mph and then start smoothing out around 60 mph.

I think it's just your "Slow Down" indicator.

I could slow down.... but with a 22R it is a little exciting when you get over 65..... When I hit the brakes a little it stops. Its much like the death wobble just not quite as intense. Its only when I'm goin over 70... which doesn't happen often, only down big hills. I guess I'll keep her under 75  just wanted to get some other opinions

This happens to me on my 4Runner. When my front tires wear uneven like this (left tire) /----\ (right tire) I get that shaking at 35-45 mph & at 70-75 mph. As long as your rear tires are worn even, try rotating your tires front to rear.

It really is the greatest feeling to be the girl in the 26 year old truck flying past mercedes and bmw's. Doesn't happen often but it pretty much makes my day when it does.  :hahaha:

I have BFG AT 33 12x50's at the moment.

I'm thinking rotating my tires couldnt hurt.... I suppose I'll do that this weekend. Thanks!

My 4-runner did it to me when the knuckle bearings (kingpins) on the top and bottom of the axle started coming loose. is your truck IFS or solid axle??

I may be mistaken but did you have a steering/wobble issue a few months back that you posted about? Turion bearings or something? If im wrong thats pretty standard

at one point my ford friends were bugging me to see how fast my truck(84 pickup) would go. so one day on the open interstate we did. supposedly i was going 110. the Ole 22R/G52 were pretty wound out but the did it. i didn't notice too bad of a wobble. also recently before i threw a rod in the RE i put in that same truck, i was going about 70-75 maybe 80 and i could feel some vibration but i think it may have been a warning that my 4th cyl rod was not doing so hot or something. not saying that's wrong with your truck though. that engine had been hydrolocked twice, once with the HG blowing and me getting water in the oil.
lets not and say we did.

Check your knuckle studs and ubolts.  I've had wobbles when either of those get loose.
