Transfer Case Flange Question
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:14:20 PM »
I am wondering if I can swap the front t case flange from the chain drive case I removed from my 4runner and put it on the rear of my rear gear drive case. They are interchangeable, right? If so, to remove them, do you have to knock that little dimple out of the slot on the shaft? What torque to take them to?
Thanks.

Yes it will fit, I just took one off an 87 auto and put it on a gear driven case to accept the cv joint
I just use impact gun

Thanks. So are the flanges on gear drive cases interchangeable front and rear as well?

They are the same all around. If you don't have a impact use two bolts, a big bar, and a breaker bar with the 30mm socket. Enjoy! oh yeah and spend the $$ and get a new nut.
If you see it, its for sale.

I am not sure on this, but I believe the splines on the early chain drive cases had a square cut to them as apposed to the more triangular cut of the gear drive and late model (divorceable) chain drive cases. Your 4cyl Auto chain drive flanges might have fit onto your gear drive t/case, but I fear you only have partial spline contact. I need to look at an early chain drive flange myself to verify this....... or I could just ask Marlin about it :gap:  I'll let you know what I find out-

I am wondering if I can swap the front t case flange from the chain drive case I removed from my 4runner and put it on the rear of my rear gear drive case. They are interchangeable, right? Hey, the only stupid question is the one not asked. Is your 4Runner a V6 or a 1996+ model? Because V6 chain drive cases and any chain drive case after 1995 use a 30-spline flange whereas the gear drive transfer case uses a 27-spline flange. In general, they are not compatible.

:_oops2:  I'll just use the front one off my donor gear drive. I've been working a lot and spending a ton of time on my runner. Starting to overlook the obvious.
Thanks guys.
