Idenitfy This T-case and Adapter......
« on: Aug 24, 2004, 08:07:43 PM »
I got a free t-case a while ago and this funky adapter was bolted to it.  I don't know what tranny it's supposed to be used with and there are no markings on the casting.  The T-case is a gear driven, top shifter.  Pics,

I posted this on 4x4wire and a couple of fellas over there said it might be a late 70's t-case with an L43 tailhousing.  Also, the splines don't taper off on the input, they run all the way back to the case.  Can someone satisfy my curiousity?  Thanks.

L43 sounds like the best idea.  Marlin is here he just might see this.  Im sure he would know.

I'll agree with the L43 assumption...My buddy has one like this cobbled into an 84 extra cab.
'84 Hilux, locked, dual-cased, winched, EFI converted, 37" tired, half-doored (in the summer...)
'87 Supra, 400 HP.  smooth as glass at 130 'cause my tires are NEW!...

That adapter mates an L43 side shift, 4spd trans to tcase.  It's a factory part found on '79/'80 trucks.  L43 is light duty, no larger than 33" tires and no side steppin of the clutch.
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

All you guys are right

It is a 79 to 80 L43 adapter housing thay goes between the 4 speed trans and gear driven t/cqase.

If you look at the bottom edge of the adapter, where it is resting on the blue towell, there will be a 8 digit number.
The first is the year, the next two is the month, ant the last five, the serial number.
For example, 00601940 would be made in June of 80 and is the 1,940th unit made in that month.

Only the 79-80 L43 style t/cases had the total, oversize spline input gear.

Thanks a lot!

One more question, the current tranny in my 4runner is a 1987 W56 w/ t-case.  When I go dual cases, which case should I use as the reduction unit in the front and why?
