Input Shaft Bastardization

This input shaft was in a transfer case I had acquired.
Why was this done?
Ed Gilbert - TLCA #5659, So. Cal. TLCA,

that WAS from a L43 tcase,(tcase found behind a L43 transmission)
  they took too much off but its  still  usable
