toyota 8" axle breather
« on: Mar 04, 2008, 07:20:44 PM »
I would like to install an extended breather on my rear axle, 85 4runner. Wondering what thread type this is? I originally thought it was simply 1/8" npt but was wrong. Do you know of a kit or barbed hose fitting that I can buy to accomplish this?I already have a K&N breather that I planned on using to vent the axle which has a 3/8" male stem on it.

marlin sells breather kits....

Axle Breather Kit
We have received lots of requests for a differential breather kit so we put one together using top quality Toyota parts. The Breather Kit features a ball valve on the end of a section of tubing and a threaded fitting that fits your axle.

The long tubing allows flexible mounting locations. One kit vents one axle.

   Axle Breather Kit, Pickup/4Runner/Tacoma, $29

http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/axles.htm

you can also make your own... the 1/8" npt is fine. that is what i use. the brass fitting threads into the housing as it cuts new threads

yank an intake fitting out of a nissan or a toy at the junkyard, or take an 1/8" NPT die and rethread the barb a little further down, and screw it in.  That's what I do.

The fitting off of the intake manifold will work. The Toyota part number is 90404-51319.

If you go to a nissan dealership and ask for part # 38323-C6010 they'll pull up diff breathers for the nissan axle.  They are the same thread as our toyotas only $3 and have a long neck to put a rubber tube on and up out of the way.  I used small fuel line and a fuel filter on the end of each breather.  The rear breather is routed up behind the tail light on the passenger side of the truck.  The other is in the engine bay above the passenger wheel well.

Hope this helps :)

I tookthe stock vent bolt(?) out of the diff, and took it to my local hardware store.  Matched the threads, and bought a hosebarb that matched thosethreads.  Bought several feet of hose that fit the barb, and ran my front diff to the hinge of the hood, and my rear into the taillight.

or you can just take the poptop off the fitting on the axle and use it, just attach the hose to whats left on the axle with a hose clamp, run it as high as you need and put your breather on the top of yer hose

use a small screwdriver to remove the cap off the axle and there ya go :disturbed:

the only problem with that is you only have maybe 3/8" the hose is clamped to.

i too don't like this idea, not that it doesn't sound ok, i just dont trust it... there is no actual barb, more like a tube with a flare on the end... doesn't seem to me it would bite enough....

and with a real fitting, i can run a hose clamp on it... i feel a lot better about a hose clamp on a barbed fitting

actually, the barb on it is way bigger than a barbed fitting (OD) it is just short.

the part that houses the stock jiggle cap doesn't have a real barb to it, more of a flare on the short tube...

i have done it, and not saying it wont work. just saying i would not trust it... it is a very short fitting. i would rather have a longer barb that i could clamp a hose clamp on to. if you dont agree with my modifications or how i go about them, that is fine. i am stating why i went with what i did. if you have different opinions on it, that is fine. however, please do not say i have no experience, when you have no idea what experience i have or don't have, nor know what i have or have not done

The toyota intake fitting works great! But a little pricey brand new $8 a piece. I love that a toyota part threads right into the axle.

BTW2, Same with the front diff
BTW3, And I tapped barbs into the top of the tranny and transfer case for breather lines too (then really sealed up the shift boots)

I prefer the longer fitting too. I used the nissan part and some fuel line and a cheapo filter...works nice... :)
