some bore tech ?'s
« on: Feb 06, 2008, 07:59:30 PM »
how much would it be to get my block bored out to 40 thou over?

i was reading somewhere where glen was saying that is the perfect amount for a 22re block... just wondering what it will do to bore it out that much

aka how many ponies will i gain and what not?

pros and cons?

40 thousandths is only .040 (40/1000=4/100=.04) thats very little. I would highly doubt it will be beneficial power-wise, but I am no engine builder. I could do some math and figure out how many liters or cu. in. that would net you, but I really don't feel like it. Others may have something else to say (like Glen) but personally, unless you have a really messed up block, I would not bother. Just bore it out enough to get smooth cylinders, then call it good. I think that is all boring an engine out is really for, to get a good seal when putting in new piston rings and oil deal (I forgot what that one was called). If you are looking for power, get a header, and a more aggressive cam, and gasket match all the intake (I dunno about the exhaust :dunno: ) and hope for the best. Hope this helps you out!

yeah man a bore job only and you won't feel any power difference, unless of course your engine is hammered pigshit to begin with.  wait till you blow a head gasket and then get a cam, so you can blow the bottom end apart. :gap:

Or just get a cam now.  When I rebuilt my engine, I threw a cam in it, and did some other things, and oh man, what a difference...but I had 14HP at the rear wheel before that...and I *think* i still have the dyno sheet to prove it.

:haha: 14 HP?  Wow, that kinda power is hard on the drivetrain isn't it?  and how do you keep tires on it?

Boring it out a size or two will not net you any real gains by itself.

Mine is bored .060 over, and it was a stock bre before the rebuild. I put a hole through the block, and needed a replacement. The freebie I got took .060 to clean up, so thats what it is.

yea  i think what i said  was  not to go over .040  , because with my truck i HAD  to have a v6 radiator  to keep it cool at highway speeds

test your compression,  if its  not under 130 psi  and you dont use oil,  dont bother,   my original 20R  had 80 psi  on each cylinder when it got rebored,  but  the pistons wobbled inside the cylinders  so much  you could easily  see the rings

get a  header, a  2 1/4 inch exhaust,  and a  nice cam with .430 - .450 lift

there more power in the heads  than in boring ,
