Transmission Question
« on: Dec 09, 2007, 10:04:36 PM »
I recently bought a 80 PU with a 5spd swap I believe it is a L-series trans. My question is when taking off from a stop if I am giving the truck any gas and letting the clutch out the transmission engages really hard it only does it in 1st & 2nd no other gear. I can let out the clutch without giving it any gas or let it out as slow as humanly possible and it also fine. What could be the problem. And another question will a W56 or R151 fit behind a 20R?

Thanks J

Welcome to  :turtle: , I can assume you did not do the tranny swap and therefore you may not know what clutch was used, did they replace the throw out bearing or the pilot bearing? is the pressure plate in backwards?
Note : First and second gear are the hardest on a tranny, as the RPM and momentum increases it gets easier to shift the higher gears however, a properly set up clutch should not engage as hard as you indicate.
Give it some time for many of the knowledgeable members of this site too make further suggestions to your problem, good luck

Well the swap was done back in 2001 and according to the recipt the clutch, and bearing's were replaced. Now as to the conditon of the trans when installed is unknown. The recipt says "rebuilt" I'll run it until I have some real problems then it and the transfer case are coming out and either a W56 or R151 will go in which ever one will work gotta do some more research. Hey Glenn how have you been since the accident? Got the truck replaced yet? Well I live in Washington now no longer in Arkansas sold my 91 and bought a 80 with 148k on the clock runs real good just the small trans issue.

I've had a l43, a l45 and an l52 in my truck and some had broken gears and bad bearings and they all shifted fine. i think you might have a bad clutch. but it may also be the clutch slave cylinder or release fork. because if they removed an l43 and installed a l52 those parts are different. when i removed my l43 parts of the clutch fell on the ground!!!

Well I'm just gonna wait until it takes a dump then swap in a W56 or R151 and then a new clutch and bearing's. It works great after 3rd gear..

If you have an opportunity to get the gear driven transfer case, go that route easing the swap of duals !  :yesnod:

i've got a ceramic clutch and it definetly doesn't do that. how do you put a pressure plate backwards?

the clutch arm on my l43 was cast and the one for the l52 is stamped steel. the l43 clutch pivot points were badly worn and so was the throw out bearing guide.
