broken ankle
« on: Oct 23, 2007, 08:00:23 PM »
yup, i could have a broken ankle. the start of the third week of my new job went bad.

so i hop back in the truck to grab a pen and a condition report, get out, shut the door and step off the last step on the tank onto the grass(into a grass hidden hole). next thing i know, paper, pen and keys go flying as i land on the ground. the pain was so bad i wanted to puke. :reg: the bad news was that i still had to load my truck with five cars and drop them off at the auction. the good news was, that was my last load for the day.

today i went to my doctor and she said that without x-rays she couldn't tell if it was a major sprain or broken. so straight to the hosipal i went. i don't know why they couldn't tell me there, but i will find out if its broke tomarrow afternoon.    i'm not happy :shakehead:

Bummer dude, I hope it turns out something small.  Mabye you'll get lucky like I did :gap:  I broke my ankle in may, turned out to be an avulsed fracture, I wound up wearing one of those funky boot things instead of getting a cast. :gap:

this is true in most cases. Sprains will never fully heal. Bone will actually heal itself if set back properly. Although tendons will always have a weak spot where it was torn from a sprain

Hmmmmm that doesn't sound too good. If "nothing is connected" then you have what's called a tri-malleolar fracture, and you have a date with the operating room. I also hope your doc looked to see if there is an associated dislocation, 'cause tri-malleoloar fractures often are dislocated, and need to be reduced quickly, or there is risk of dying bone tissue and possibly permanent nerve damage. I'm going to assume that there isn't, cause I would think they would have gotten you in right away if it was.

There are several other types of fractures that can occur, but the whole "nothing connected" thing is a bit bothersome. I hope they have you in a good rigid splint and up on crutches. Typically they won't operate for about 5 days after the injury, 'cause they want the swelling to go down. I'm not saying your absolutly going to have surgery, but sounds like a possibility.....

the only thing they said, was that it was an avulsion and the bone on the outside of my leg was broken at the bottom, so I'm guessing thats the disconnected part. still no call for anything about an orthopedic doctor. I'm starting to wonder whats taking so long

Whew...thats a big difference. An avulsion fracture is actually not much of a big deal orthopedically. Obviously depends on the size of the chunk, but if its a small avulsion, we will often times just splint it for about 6 weeks and then check to make sure it's healing. Hope it's feeling better.

Alot of orthopedic docs are refusing to take work comp any more (I don't know how it is in NJ, but in Cali, it's a huge problem). Did you go through the ER, 'cause if you did, they should have refered you to the ortho on call, who is somewhat "obligated" to do your follow up.

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions....
