4wd trans in 2wd truck?
« on: Nov 10, 2007, 09:43:06 PM »
Hey guys, I found a 1993 Toyota 2wd truck for sale. It has a 22re and a 5 speed trans, but the trans is bad. He only wants $150 for the truck, and it runs great, but I need a trans for it and I am having a difficult time finding a 2wd trans to go in it. I Have a few questions for you guys. First of all, what transmission is in the truck? Could it be something simple as to why its not working, and lastly, would a 4wd trans work in the truck with the 2wd tail section? I know nothing about transmissions so I'm asking you to set me straight. Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It has a w55 in it.  You should be able to convert a w56 4by tranny with the 2wd tail, but as easy as they are to split apart I'd suggest checking out the tranny.  Any idea in what way it's bad?

using the 2wd tail, you also use the output shaft of the 2wd,

The guy put a new clutch in it. It drove for a week and then wouldnt move in any gear. If you sit in the truck, you can put the tranny into every gear, it just wont go anywhere.

Considering that it worked fine, but stopped working fine after he did work to it, his work is most likely suspect... Buy it, pull the tranny and take a peek at the clutch while you're in there.  You basically have to do the same thing regardless if it's the clutch or the tranny, and that's to pull the tranny.  :)

Any more insight on this guys/gals? I forgot to mention some thins as well. The clutch pedal has pressure on it like it is working fine, I have not checked to see if the slave is moving but I think it is. Also I can shift the transmission into any gear as well, but it just wont move.

Thanks
chris

For the price you can't go wrong, grab it before he changes his mind and worry about what is wrong later.  :twocents:

i got a good deal on a used tranny, from a member here for my 2wd, it was $150.... finding a deal like that would have a new running truck for less than $300......

Could I swap in a 4wd trans/t-case and not hook up a front driveshaft? 2lo would be cool

you could but you would need to swap the cross member and youll need a different driveshaft from a 4wd for the rear

When you check the slave to see that it moves make sure to check that it moves full distance in both directions. Sometimes when they're worn they'll stick and not let the clutch engage.

I threw a t-case and axles from a jeep under a 73 TOY many many moons ago for a boonie crasher. I still have it and it actually in the process of getting started on a new rebuild.
