is it worth changing 84' rear axles
« on: Dec 11, 2007, 04:19:46 PM »
I’ve been on this forum a lot lately, trying to get good ideas. I have an 84 Pickup that I want to rebuild. I would like to run Irok 40's.  Instead of beefing up my stock axles, should I look into getting Later, wider axels?  All input would be much appreciated :usa:

Yes yes yes... the wider axle will give you better stability on the trail (I would know  ) I can't wait to come across the wider yota axle  when I can afford it

How difficult is the process, off course their will be some modifications, but for the most part does everything line up?

yes, do it.  3 inches wider and they also seem to be stronger too.  it will bolt right up.  keep the e-brake cable for the ifs rear axle, everything else works.

My E-brake on my 1980 toy worked with the wider axle(1987)...but it never hurts to get the other E-brake cable as well.

The wider rears came on the IFS trucks and 4-runners.  All year models that offered IFS as far as I know.  So like 85 on up.

86  and above with IFS  and 4runners went to coils on the rear in 90 i believe. so they would be much harder to mod. :flamer:

86 and up axles have bigger drum brakes too 10 in instead of 8 which makes a big difference with the 1 inch master cyl and v6 ifs calipers and fj80 rotors.  I got that set up and love it... can lock all 4 35's up on the pavement.  Also the 90 and up e-brake wont work with the old set up.

what would be the fix for the e brake on the 90 and newer truck axles ? new cables?  brackets?

it's got two separate cables going forward to a center point on what would be the main e-brake cable. I just cut it off and got an all pro trans brake (which will not hold a truck on a 45 degree angle like their site states).  You would probably figure somethin out for it but seems like a low point that would just get hung up on stuff.

see and that ebrake set up is crappy compared to what toyota did on the linked 90 4runner axles. The brakes are hooked up inside the drum where as your axle has little arms that are out in the open with rubber boots to hold in moisture and then rust up and act like the e-brake is on all the time.

I have a 89 V6 pickup rear axle in my 85 4runner. I like the extra beef the housing has, and the extra width (3 inches over the 85 and earlier)

The only pain in the ass was that I didnt get a cable for it, tried to use my own and ended up having to buy a new one from toyota. It was still a pain in the ass to install but other than that they bolt right up.

one of the main things i like about the newer brake is they have fewer parts and look easier to work on. when i got my 79 i noticed the rear brakes were weak, so i got new shoes and when i removed the old ones i noticed hardly any wear??? hmm looks like the auto adjusters were cleaned real nice then rusted up.  front brakes only. and hardly any e brake action. they work now, but I'm going to use the new style when i do the axel change.

you also might want to tie up your LSVP that will help dramatically or replace it all together and put a proportioning valve in.  I did that also and it helped immensely
