Winch Mounting?
« on: Aug 29, 2007, 01:31:15 PM »
I have a pretty normal(for now) 87 4Runner.   The previous owner yanked the bumpers and put Smittybilt bull bars on the front and rear.  I like them.. looks cool and works great.

The question, though, is where/how do I possibly mount a winch?  Surely someone must have these bars and a winch?(this is project #3 after the new header)

post up some pics of the bumper...help would then come from the many people that don't have that bumper and the few that do.

Picture of the same bumper.

I hope not to do something as ugly as this.

Optimally it could maybe mount up underneath somewhere and the cable be fed between the tubes if need be(it's already scratched up - no biggie - maybe a piece of rubber could be added?)

Not the best picture in the world but here is a picture of what a friend of mine did with his SmittyBuilt bumper. Winch is mounted behind it. This bumper has taken a lot of abuse over the years.

plekto, the bumper you have doesnt have provisions for a winch, it wasnt designed for it, they do have a version that does have the winch provisions, but it looks liek the one that you refered to as ugly. i have heard several people say the sb winch bumpers suck, they wont stand up to winching situations, however can be made to work with lots of re-enforcement of the mounts. i have never seen someone modify the doulbe tube design, but nothing is impossible. you may have an issue with the fact there may not be enough clearance between the radiator and where you want the winch to sit back to have the wire come from between the tubes, good luck

Yeah, that seems to be the issue - very little clearance and I don't want to restrict airflow very much.  I'll try to get some pictures - I think I have about 6-8 inches by about 4-6 inches to mount it in.(tight fit) - q: who makes the smallest yet decent winches?

I'm thinking on going warn m8000. i think they can be tucked in pretty tight. approx 80lbs. can be made lighter with some of that fancy $$ winch line.
