Dumb" question regarding toyota 3rd members
« on: Sep 23, 2007, 09:00:53 AM »
In solid axle 4x4s (85 in particular) is there a difference between the front 3rd member and the rear? I see people selling geared 3rd's all the time, but is there a difference? Would the front swap to the rear?

And if there is a difference, what is it? Thanks

OK...  is the front 3rd member from an IFS 1986 truck 4cyl the same as an 85?

There is a guy in my area selling "front and rear 3rd menbers from a 1986 toyota 4runner. these are from a 4cyl non turbo and are open"

Would this work in my 85?

:shake: No, IFS fronts are not interchangeable with solid axle fronts.  :psss: Rears are interchangeable though. Also 79 through 85 front and rears are all interchangeable and are interchangeable with rears from an 86-95? I believe.

Unless, when you say "stock locking hubs" you mean the IFS ones, then no, they won't work on a solid axle. They are splined differently than the solid axle units.  :yesnod:

rear 8" thirds will bolt right into a front 8" third unless its an elocker

to add:

the 8" rear third is the same from 79-95, it is the same third used in solid front axle toys from 79-85

bobby long has 4030 cryoed conversion hub gears that convert them to the solid axle spline. they are the same price as his regular chromo hub gears
