cummins help

I am buying a 93 cummins extra cab long bed with an auto and was wondering what are some of the weaknesses or flaws these trucks have to them?

its an auto but its been rebuilt with 6K miles on it so no worries there. the engine has 178K with banks kit and propane injection. I get it friday cant wait. Its finally gonna be nice cause I can tow my 4runner around instaed of bundling up with 15 layers cause all the windows broke.

The only thing I would worry about is the truck falling apart.  The engines are great.

tranny is the main problem both stick and automatic have weakness
auto can be rebuild and up grade to all most bullet proof

the six speed have been told you canuse a later model one and add better clutch

the trans is the weakest link.  them older automatics did not hold up that great specially towing. you can get on the tdr forum and find out anything you need to know about dodge. I did and they are as informative on there and these guys are about yotas. but all to gether great trucks

The autos are a 727 with an od on the back better known as a 518. These do not have a lock up converter so the trannys don't "break" often. But heat does tend to get out of hand do to loose converters that come in them from the factory and  what most places will replace them with when they rebuild the tranny. Best bet is to replace the stock converter with a good tight low rpm engagment one from one of the big diesel trans guys or as I have done a Hughes for right at $400. It will make a very noticable difference in fuel mileage, throttle response, and most important keeping slip and temps low when towing.
I have 300,000 miles on my 92 W250 auto over 150,000 pushing 350hp and 850 tq hauling my slide in camper and towing trailers. Still get 20 mpg unloaded at every fill up. I keep the tranny fluid changed and watch my temps when it is hot in the hills. These trucks are pretty much bullet proof and easy to work on. There are so many ways to get more hp out of them on the cheap than you can imagine. Enjoy.

X2 on the convertor. When most guys start bombing an auto with a stock tranny, they'll throw in a better convertor and that will hold for a few extra ponies. What is included in the Bunks kit? Any ideas on power output?

I would guess a 14 or 16 cm exhaust housing maybe injectors. If it has the Banks intercooler that is a good piece and well worth hanging on to. But for the most part there are much better deals out there than the Banks stuff for the Cummins. Especially the first gens.
I would be very careful with the propane on the Cummins as well. Really not much benefit gained that could be gained by doing free mods. Full fuel screw adjustment and a timing bump with a set of PODs injectors and a fuel pin grind or set for max fuel and you can pretty much gain 125hp or so. Timing bump and propane is a definate no-no. Headgasket will say bye bye.

Good luck if ya get it. I hope you have as good a luck and as much fun with it as I've had with mine.

I wanna see some pictures of smoke rolling out those stacks. Well I guess with that much boost it probably doesn't smoke that much. Nice rig! Those twins are killer  :yesnod:

the fuel pump is cranked up all the way, Prince of Darkness injectors, and just the twins, and it is gettin about 800 ponies, and way to much torque, the only downfall is that he is currently runnin a 2wd getrag tranny, so no more 4wd burnouts

here are some pics of my buddy's truck, he upgraded the turbos with an hx 40 off of an 8.3 liter cummins, and a hd2 off of an 10 liter cummins, still pushing around 80 lbs of boost no smokey burnouts yet, he needs to get the drive shaft balanced and head studs.  the next upgrades are an inline pump of an 8.3 and bigger injectors(370 marine injectors) and new injector lines

yah i had a first gen and didnt really have much to complains about other then the fact that the truck fell apart... the headliner fell the door kinda fell off.... the dash came apart... oh and trannys are pretty much it... dont run it low on diesel or out cause youll fry your bocsh rotary pump..... i did it once...also i had the nv4500 and 5th gear allways went out...     the brakin on the rear axle sucks but you can always switch to rear disc or just change the rear wheel cylinders to ones off of a 1 ton chevy...or go to dieseltruckresource.com and have all of your questions answereed

yup your biggest problem will be the body falling right off the frame after all i realized they are made in mexico but the rest of the truck will go for a long time mine is a 93 with an auto and a big tranny cooler and when we run demolition derby's in the summer we hook it to a 20 foot flat deck with a 4500 pound car on and it will hall a$$ right up the free way 85 mph no problem
