99 4runner transmission
« on: Sep 26, 2007, 01:56:29 AM »
What are my options?
I want to change my 99 4runner to have a passenger side drop so I can put an FJ 80 front axle in for the sas.
Thanks

what motor do you have??   3.4??     you'll need a 34-4GT and  just  use a gear drive tcase or 2 http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transfercase/taco_box.htm

What I have is a wrecked 2wd 4runner with the 3.4. I want to make 4wd and solid axle. Can I use the transmission that is in it now or will I have to get a transmission out of a 4wd 4runner.

Yeah, I think the easy thing would be to get the 4wd tranny.  I think it's the R150f.  The t-case that comes with the tranny is driver drop, and the obvious solution is get a double transfer case from marlin with the correct drop.

Alternatively, I think you can use the R150 from pre-96 v6's along with the bellhousing from the newer tranny, maybe even the one you have on the truck now?  The older tranny will have the pass. drop that you want, but it uses the early-style chain-driven t-case which some claim is questionable.  The best info for this option would be found where someone swapped a new 3.4 into their older 3.0 V6 rig.

If you have an auto, ...uh... I have no idea.                  ...convert to manual?

Heres what I've. 99 2wd 3.4 auto wrecked in the front, hood, fenders, grill, steering and drivers side control arms, rack and pinion and knuckle. The rest of the vehicle is super clean and in great shape. I thought, well I can fix all that and drive it. then I thought for what it would cost I could make 4wd which is what I wanted anyway. After a bunch of research I found I could use an FJ80 front end and Marlins adapter to make it a passenger side drop. I have found about 3 FJ front ends. But the big question now is, do I go with the 4wd auto trans or do I get a 5 speed manual? Not that I've given enough thought to how much work this is already should I go ahead and turn this thing into a manual? I sure would like to here some comments, thoughts and suggestions.

there is an adaptor to convert your 2WD tranny check this thread out

If you plan to SAS I would seriously look into linking the front, either case you'll need to reinforce the frame, big time.

The FZJ 80 axle with an E-locker would be a better choice, then it'll be easier to keep the electronics working, since it has the wheel senors.

Don't Ask when I'm gonna go SAS, I'm not... I'll build a buggy first!
